As useful as USB-C port is, and how it’s being used with many portable devices that most of us use each day, there is still a flaw with the port, and that would be how it’s not nearly as accessible as USB 3.0 ports yet. The reason that we say this is because many laptops that do use USB-C ports, use few USB-C ports and barely any other ports. The MacBook is a great example of doing, as some MacBooks only use one, two, or three USB-C ports. No USB 3.0 ports.

That is where USB-C adapters come in and that’s why we’re here to review this Alxum 8 in 1 USB-C adapter that allows you to do more even with few USB-C ports.

Features

Alright, so the first thing to know is that you can only use this Alxum adapter if you have a device that uses a USB-C port because this adapter only has a built-in cable that you can use to connect to use a USB-C port.

With that said, for this review we used a Microsoft Surface Go and a Lenovo Flex 5 laptop to test this Alxum adapter. The Surface Go only has a single USB-C port, which makes it great to use for a USB-C adapter. The Flex 5 that we used has a single USB-C port, but it also has additional ports, but that the same time, this Alxum adapter can still be useful if you want to have the ability to connect additional devices to your laptop.

Let’s check out what additional options you are able to use with this adapter.

USB-C Power Delivery port.

The first port that we want to mention from this Alxum adapter is its use of a USB-C Power Delivery port, and this is important because it ensures that even with the adapter connected to your device you’re able to charge it from the adapter.

All you have to do is plug in your Power Delivery charger to the USB-C port for your device to start charging. We tested this out with the Surface Go and the Lenovo Flex 5 laptop and it worked flawlessly. What’s even better is the Power Delivery port on this adapter can accept 100W of charging power, so there isn’t any compromise when using this adapter.

Two USB 3.0 Ports

The main ports that tend to be missing for laptops that use USB-C ports are USB 3.0 ports. As great as USB-C ports are, not every device out there uses a USB-C port. Yet. So having only USB-C ports on a laptop can be limiting, and so the use of a USB-C adapter can be necessary.

Which is another reason why this Alxum adapter is helpful because it makes use of two USB 3.0 ports. This allows you to connect two smartphones at the same time, a mouse and a keyboard, and any other device that you want to connect to your laptop.

In our case, we were able to connect a mouse, keyboard, and smartphones with the USB 3.0 ports on this adapter.

3.5mm Headphone Jack

There is also a headphone jack on this adapter, and even though you may be not using it on this adapter, as most larger devices such as tablets, and laptops still use 3.5 headphone jacks. For those that don’t though, the headphone jack on this adapter can be useful.

HDMI Port / VGA port

If you want to be able to transfer the display of your device wherever you want, there is also an HDMI port that can be connected to another monitor or even a TV screen.

On the older side of things, but might still be useful, this adapter also uses a VGA port that can be used for transferring your display to other screens.

Ethernet Port

There is even an ethernet port on this Alxum adapter that can be used for a wired internet connection. This can be a great addition to a laptop or tablet for a faster internet connection inside your own home as a Wireless Wifi connection is almost always slower than a wired connection.

SD Card Reader

SD cards are great to use for transferring and storing files. While having the adapter connected to your laptop, you’re also able to connect an SD card because this adapter makes use of an SD card slot.

Design

Size and Weight:

The USB-C adapter is only as large as how many ports they feature. This Alxum adapter is quite small and won’t be intrusive at all. The length of the adapter is 4.5 inches, it has a width of 3 inches and a thickness of 0.9 inches.

It’s a good size to make sure that everything fits and functions properly.

Functional Components:

There are no drivers to use when it comes to using this adapter, and all you have to do is plug it into the USB-C port on your device and it’s ready to use. However, we will say that the USB-C built-in cable for the adapter is quite short, but at the same time, once you plug it in and can connect many different devices, we didn’t care about the built-in USB cable.

Build

Structure and Material:

The build quality of this Alxum USB-C adapter is great and that’s because it’s made of Aluminum. Most higher-end popular laptops on the market are made of Aluminum and so this adapter would match great with them. The built-in cable is the only part that you have to worry about breaking from this adapter, but with the cable being short and stiff, it won’t be breaking apart for a while.

Tech:

Considering that you’re able to connect eight devices at the same time, this adapter surprisingly does not overheat.

Reliability

USB-C adapters are built in the name of being reliable because they give you the ability to connect many devices at the same time. That’s exactly what this Alxum can do because you’re able to charge your laptop or tablet with the USB-C Power Delivery port and do whatever else you’d like with it.

Summary:

Power:

The great thing about adapters, and especially this Alxum adapter is that it gives you the ability to do more if your laptop or tablet has a limited amount of ports.

Design:

This USB-C adapter is simple to use, and there are no worries about having to install any software. You just have to plug it in and you’re ready to use it.

Build:

The build quality is great with this adapter being made of Aluminum, and it does not overheat, which is great considering that it has a 100W Power Delivery port and seven other ways to use it at the same time.

Reliability:

Adapters are meant to be reliable because they make being able to use more devices possible. This Alxum adapter does just that by giving you the ability to do more.

Conclusion:

USB-C ports are the future, but at the same time, we’re not ready to let go of USB 3.0 ports and many other ways of connectivity. That’s where this Alxum USB-C adapter comes in that allows you to use a USB-C port, while at the same time using two USB 3.0 ports and many other connections to use with your laptop, tablet or USB-C smartphone.
