Pros

  • Very small size that can fit into your pocket and it's also really easy to hold.
  • Easy to use with automatic charging and automatic shutdown
  • There are 2 charging ports with a shared charging current between the two ports. This means that there's a less charging speed compromise.

Cons

  • The conversion rate could be better to provide more Output Capacity
  • The use of Lithium Polymer batteries puts the batteries at risk of getting heated up and as a result, they can expand.

As time moves forward, there’s one certain thing. It’s that power banks will continue to advance further and further with their capabilities.

This is because power banks can fit larger power capacities into small compartments. Not only that, portable chargers have better-charging technology and even the ability to charge more than a single device. When it’s all pulled off right, a power bank that has it all, something that should be considered for purchase.

This is the Astro E3 from Anker. Just like Anker’s many other power banks, this one can deliver on the same level and at the same it surpasses.

Power Capacity

So the first thing. The power capacity of the power bank is really good, even with the Output capacity being lower than the initial. We know that Anke uses Panasonic battery cells on a lot of their chargers but that’s not the case here.

Instead, the Astro E3 opts to use Lithium Polymer batteries and by doing so the power bank is quite slim and makes it much more portable. Also, at the same time, the power capacity can suffer during charging and this can result in an Output capacity of 8,000mAh or even lower.

pic-5

So with an Output capacity of 8,000mAh, there’s still a lot you can do. Charging most smartphones about 3 times or more won’t be a problem.

As for tablets, if you want to charge tablets to their max potential then it’s best to charge them alone. This is because since this power bank has 2 charging ports if you connect 2 devices at once, the 2 devices are going to charge from the same source of power.

You’re going to want to take advantage of the entirety of the power capacity if you want to charge most tablets fully.

With all that said, this power bank can last you for a few days.

Output Charging: Per Port: 5V/2.4A  Max Output: 3.0A

It has 2 Output charging ports and it shares an open current between the 2 ports. This means that the Max Output of 3.0A is shared, which makes the charging very versatile.

However, the Max charging speed per port is 2.4 Amps, which is impressive since it’s the Max Standard charging speed and with it, nearly any device that you connect to this power bank will be able to charge at its max charging speed.

Although that’s only possible if you’re charging only a single device with it. Once you connect 2 devices to the charger, then the charging power is split between the 2 charging ports.

Charging 2 Devices at Once is Designed Well

When you are charging 2 devices at once, then each port becomes a 5V/1.5A port since the Max Output of the power bank is 3 Amps, it only makes sense for the charging current to adjust accordingly. We don’t think this is a flaw, though.

We like this kind of design or charging power since it creates an efficient charging environment. Most power bank with a Max Output similar to that of the Astro E3 is that they make the charging speed out of each of the ports fixed and this leads to a limited/slow charging speed for 1 port.

That’s not the case here. Instead, the Astro E3 power bank can provide a fair charging experience to any 2 devices that are connected.

Input Charging: 5V/2.0A

The recharge matches the power capacity very well, as E3 can recharge at 2 Amps. If you want to recharge the power bank as its fastest charging speed, then we suggest using a 2 Amp wall charger or greater and that will result in a recharge time of about 5-6 hours.

Using a wall charger that is slower than 2 Amp could leave you waiting for double the time.

Design

Size and Weight

One of the most noticeable and likable things about this power bank is the way it’s designed.

The Astro E3 isn’t that big, even for what it’s capable of. It has a length of 5 inches, a width of 2.6 inches, and a thickness of 0.65 inches. The weight is quite light as 8 ounces. So it nearly has the same dimensions as a smartphone, as long as you’re not counted the thickness of it.

It’s possible to hold this charger in your hand while you’re using and you can even fit it into either your front or back pocket. However, you can’t fit this power bank along with your smartphone in your pocket.

We’re really surprised that a power bank with a 10,000mAh power capacity and 2 charging ports can fit into a pocket, but the Astro E3 can accomplish just that.

Functional Components

The Astro E3 lives up to the standards of Anker’s other portable chargers, with all the functional components being easily accessible and even easier to use.

The 2 charging ports are on the same side, the Micro-USB Input port is on the long side of the charger. On top of the power bank is where you’ll find the power button and 4 LED power capacity indicators. The four LED power capacity indicators aren’t just dots, they’re circles.

Charging works like most modern power banks should function, with charging automatically starting once a device is connected to the power bank and the charger automatically shuts off when there aren’t any devices connector when all the devices connected to it are fully charges.

This makes the power button barely even usable and you’ll find that the only usage that you’ll have for it is to just check the power capacity.

Build

Structure and Material

There’s nothing special about the build quality that this power bank holds but then again there’s nothing wrong with that. It just has a top and bottom piece with the entirety of the power bank being made of plastic.

It may not sound like it’s much but the charger can very well take a few falls and it’s very ready for being an everyday use portable charger.

It’s what on the inside that you should be more worried about because Astro E3 has a very common pitfall for power banks that use Lithium Polymer battery cells.

Tech

As we mentioned before in the Power section, this power bank uses Lithium Polymer batteries and when Lithium Polymer batteries get into a high-temperature range they tend to expand. A little expansion isn’t that much of a problem but for this one, it can be.

When the Lithium Polymer batteries expand too much, then that can lead to the structure of the power bank breaking and ultimately rendering the charger useless. This is a somewhat common cause with the Astro E3 and if it does somehow occur with it for you, then you can always take advantage of Anker’s 18-Month Warranty.

TROND Bolt 12,500mAh Power Bank

Reliability

This a very reliable portable charger when you take each of its parts into consideration and this most starts with the design aspect. It’s a small and slim-ish power bank that can be very portable and that means you can take it anywhere.

Couple the awesome portability alongside the powering and build structure and you’ve got yourself a strong charging experience. There aren’t many power banks that are this small, while still being able to provide a high power capacity and 2 charging ports at the same time.

The Lithium Polymer build could use some work, as it can’t be very reliable in the long-term, though.

Summary:

Power:

The power capacity is high enough to accommodate charging smartphones very well, but if you want to charge tablets then that can be done but it’s best to charge tablets along to take advantage of the entire power capacity.

Charging speed is impressive with the Charging Current being shared between the 2 charging ports and it has a Max Output of 3.0A.

Design:

It has a top tier design and there’s no denying that with the dimensions similar to that of a smartphone. You can easily hold this and use or you can place the Astro E3 portable charger into your pocket.

Build:

The structure and material build quality are solid but it’s what’s on the inside that you should be worried about. The somewhat common problem is that the Lithium Polymer batteries tend to expand under high temperatures.

Reliability:

It’s a reliable power bank when you combine all of its capabilities of charging power paired with its awesome portability. It’s just that the poor conversion rating and ensure build quality leave from being truly superior.
