Most of the time when it comes to a charging port, its charging power is usually fixed. Meaning that if a port has a 10W charging speed, it will output 10W of charging power no matter what device is connected to it.

That changes with this Aukey wall charger. That’s because this Aukey wall charger has a dynamic power port, meaning that it changes its power output depending on what’s charging, and how many devices are charging.

So let’s take a closer look.

Power

Output Charging:

The main benefit of getting this charger is using the USB-C Power Delivery port. That’s because the USB-C port on this Aukey wall charger has a 30W charging speed when it’s used alone and if there’s another device charging with its USB-A port, then the USB-C port has an 18W charging speed.

This is where it’s “Dynamic” abilities come into play, as you can use more charging power from it when charging only a single device with it. This can be very helpful for charging larger USB-C compatible devices such as laptops. As you’re able to charge a MacBook at a faster charging speed and Chromebooks, too.

We did test out charging two devices at once with this charger. With the USB-C port charging a Google Pixel (Power Delivery compatible) and the USB-A port being charging a Galaxy S6. The Pixel in this situation is still changing rapidly, and the Galaxy S6 has a standard charging speed.

The USB-A port on this wall charger has a 12W standard charging speed.

One of the main reasons that the USB-C port has its charging speed cut when charging two devices is because the charger has a max output of 30W. With 18W being used for the USB-C port and 12W for the USB-A port.

Design

Size and Weight:

Just like any other wall charger that you have, this Aukey Dynamic wall charger isn’t going to be any different with its form factor. Or at least not by much.

The charger has a length of 2.3 inches, a width of 2.1 inches, and a thickness of 1.1 inches. The weight of the charger is 3.6 ounces.

Functional Components:

The charger has a retractable AC, and once you plug it in there’s a green LED light that turns on within the power logo above the charging ports.

Speaking of the charging ports, they’re colored distinctively. With the Power Delivery port being colored bright orange and the USB-A port has a deep green color. It definitely makes the charger stand out and dare we say, “Cool”.

Build

Structure and Material:

This Aukey wall charger is what you can expect from Aukey’s products. The AC adapter snaps out and right back into the place, but only time will really tell how well it holds up.

The charging ports hold on strong to the cables that you place into them, too.

Tech:

Even when you’re charging two devices at the same time, the charger does not get warm.

Reliability

This charger is going to be reliable as long as you’re making use of the USB-C port, as it features Power Delivery.

If you own a USB-C Power Delivery compatible tablet or laptops, the charging solely from the USB-C port will enable it to charge at higher power and that means faster charging for larger devices.

Charging a PD compatible smartphone while at the same time charging another device with the USB-A port can also be useful, too. If you’re only charging from the USB-A port, then this charger is not nearly as reliable, as it’s just standard charging.

Remember if you own an iPhone X, or an iPhone 8 and beyond, then you can use a Lightning to USB-C cable to fast charge your phone with a USB-C port.

Summary:

Power:

Charging power is dynamic indeed, as the USB-C port is able to output 30W when charging alone and 18W for when you’re dual charging.

Design:

The charger has a great looking design with its colored ports and a LED power indicator. The retractable AC adapter makes portability even easier.

Build:

The charger does not get warm when charging two devices at once.

Reliability:

This charger is going to be most reliable if you’re getting it to make use of the USB-C port, whether it’s charging from it alone, or dual charging with both ports.

Specs of the Aukey Dual-Port 30W PD Wall Charger with Dynamic Detect:

  • Output:

USB-C Power Delivery Port:  DC 5V/3A | 9V/3A | 12V/2.5A | 15V/2A | 20V 1.5A (18W-30W)

Standard Port: 12W

Max Output: 30W

  • Input: AC 100V–240V 50/60Hz
  • LED Power Indicator: Single Green Power Indicator
  • Size: 2.3 x 2.1 x 1.1 inches
  • Weight: 3.6 Ounces

Conclusion:

This Aukey wall charger brings a feature that more wall chargers should make use of. A fixed charging power for a port isn’t the best use power, but a dynamic one can open doors for what was once a simple type of a wall charger.
