Many wireless chargers on the market use the same input and what that basically means is that they use a Micro-USB input port that they’re powered from. It’s understandable that lots of wireless chargers still use the Micro-USB input port, but at the same time, there’s a new standard in town and that would be USB-C.

What is USB-C?

USB-C is the new standard of charging that offers faster-charging speeds and it’s also reversible which means that you’re going to be placing it in the right way every time.

USB-C is what most new Android smartphones are now using, and it’s even being used with larger devices such as the MacBook and some Chromebooks too. This Aukey LC-Q4 Wireless charging pad actually uses a USB-C port and that actually means a lot because most of the wireless chargers are still stuck in the past. Along with the new port, let’s see what other reasons it has to be the charger that you purchase.

Power

Output Charging:

Wireless charging speeds have gotten better over the years, that said, even with the improvements wireless charging still isn’t as powerful as wired charging. Mostly because most smartphones these days are now compatible with charging technologies such as Quick Charge and Power Delivery. That said, if you are in the market for a wireless charger then it’s best to get one that’s able to charge your Qi compatible smartphone at its max charging rate.

This Aukey LC-Q4 actually features Fast Wireless charging for Samsung smartphones and that’s because this wireless charger uses a Quick Charge wall charger to be powered. As a result, it can output a charging rate of 5V/2.0A to Samsung Qi compatible smartphones.

That said, this charger does not feature fast wireless charging for the iPhone X or the iPhone 8. Of course, if you do own an iPhone X or an iPhone 8 then we highly recommend getting another wireless charger that is able to charge them at a faster charging rate, wirelessly.

For all other Qi compatible smartphones, that aren’t Samsung phones, they’re going to get a charging rate of 5V/1.0A. As other wireless charging smartphones are not compatible with wireless fast charging, other than Samsung smartphones and the iPhone X / iPhone 8.

Input Charging:

An important thing to know when it comes to using this Aukey wireless charger is that you must use a Quick Charge USB wall charger to power it. That’s the only way that you can take advantage of the Fast Wireless charging for Samsung smartphones. If you don’t have a Quick Charge wall charger, then the step lower is to use a 2 Amp wall charger to power it, and that ‘s going to result in a charging rate of 5V/1.0A for Qi-compatible smartphones, no matter what you’re charging. The input used here is a USB-C input.

Design

Size and Weight:

Most of the time people think the smaller a tech gadget is, that means it’s better. That’s not always the case, and we’re glad that this charger actually has some size to it. It has a length/width of 4.4 inches, and a thickness of 0.3 inches.

So it’s actually a little larger than most other wireless charging pads on the market and that’s a good thing because you have more stable to place your smartphone and use it without affecting your smartphone while it’s charging. The slimness of charger is astonishing as it’s nearly as slim, if not slimmer than a smartphone these days.

Functional Components:

Using this wireless charger is not difficult and that’s basically the way it should be for all wireless chargers on the market. All you have to do is just plug the USB-A to USB-C charging cable that it comes with the wireless charger itself and then plug the USB-A port into a wall charger and you’re ready to use it.

When you place your smartphone on top of the charger there’s a LED light symbol that shines through the fabric material that’s atop the charger. It doesn’t change colors, but while your smartphone is charging, it pulses and we found that it looks very calm and since it’s under the fabric, there’s barely any light that comes through to disturb you.

Build

Structure and Material:

This quite a different looking wireless charging pad than what we’re used to with wireless chargers and that would be because of its fabric top. If you’re worried that it might get ripped or damaged, well it makes sense to think so, but at the same time, it’s unlikely as all you’re setting on top of this charger is a smartphone. The bottom of the charger is made of Aluminum.

Tech:

The charger does get a little warm and so does a smartphone during charging, but that’s the case with inductive charging in general. Charging automatically stops once your smartphone is at full power.

Reliability

This is a great wireless charger that’s useful for all Qi-compatible smartphones, and very useful for Samsung phones that can charge wirelessly as this Aukey charger features Fast Wireless charging for them. Another thing that you should know is that it does not feature Fast charging for the iPhone X and the iPhone 8, so it’s best to get one that does if you own either one of those smartphones.

Summary:

Power:

Charging power is pretty good and Aukey nearly hit all sides of wireless charging power, as it has standard and Samsung Fast wireless charging. However, it doesn’t have Fast charging for iPhones.

Design:

The size of this charger is very good as it’s quite large and therefore has more space to place your smartphone and the light that comes through the fabric is a nice touch and isn’t disruptive at all.

Build:

The build quality of this charger is very good and automatically shuts off once your smartphone is fully charged.

Reliability:

It’s a wireless charger that definitely takes a different look when it comes to comes to wireless charging pads and is perfect for most Qi compatible smartphones.
