With ports on chargers, the charging power that they’re able to output is almost always fixed. No matter, if you’re charging one or two devices at a time, the ports will have the same charging power, unless the max output is reached, then, in that case, the port would lower its power output.

That changes with Aukey’s PA-D2 Dual-port USB-C Power Delivery wall charger with Dynamic Detect. It’s a new generation of chargers from Aukey, with these chargers having the ability to change their charging power depending on how many devices are charging with it.

Power

Output Charging:

Fast charging a Samsung Galaxy S8 and a Google Pixel.

There are two USB-C Power Delivery ports to use on this Aukey wall charger.

The Dynamic part of this charger is that when you’re using just a single USB-C port to charge from, the powering potential of that port is 30W.

Charging Stats for a Google Pixel

Whereas charging two devices at once results in each of the ports outputting 18W each. Both of these charging modes have great benefits. That’s because for charging two devices at once, you can fast charge two Android smartphones that use a USB-C port. Or you can also fast charge new generation iPhones such as the iPhone X, iPhone 8, iPhone XS, and iPhone XR.

If you’re wondering how to fast charge an iPhone, as it still uses a Lightning port, all you need is a USB-C to Lightning cable to do so. Something that we did leave out is that the reason you can use 18W per port when charging two devices at once is that the max output turns to 36W.

For charging a single device at a time and getting 30W of power, this is the power range that’s great for charging USB-C laptops and tablets. For example, if you have a USB-C MacBook, then using the 30W of charging power can be highly helpful for getting a faster charge.

Design

Size and Weight:

The size of this charger is not going to be a problem. It has a length of 2.5 inches, a width of 2.3 inches, and a thickness of 1.4 inches. The weight of the charger is 4.1 Ounces.

With its use of a retractable AC adapter, the portability of this charger is great, as you can fit it into a pocket and not have to worry about it.

Functional Components:

The functional parts of this charger are few and you have minimal interactions with them, just like with any wall charger.

There’s a retractable AC adapter on one side that snaps out and right back into place. The two ports are right next to each other and they’re colored Orange. Above the two ports, there’s a Green LED light that signifies that the charger is on and ready to use.

Build

Structure and Material:

The build quality of this charger is what you can expect from most of Aukey’s products. Meaning that it has a solid build that can last, whether its the retractable AC adapter or the body of the charger.

Of course, it’s not a rugged product, so we recommend that you don’t drop it onto hard-flooring.

Tech:

On the tech side, the charger does tend to get a little warm if you’re charging two devices at once with it; or if you’re charging a single device that requires mores charging power such as a laptop. Nothing to worry about as it’s a little warmth created from charging and not overheating.

Reliability

The reliability of this highly simple Aukey wall charger can be boundless. That is if you’re someone that relies heavily on Power Delivery charging for either smartphones or a laptop.

As you’re able to fast charge two Android smartphones at the same time or newer iPhones. The charging power for more powerful and larger USB-C PD compatible devices is their, too. So just to put it straight, if you’re just looking for a regular wall charger with a USB-A port, this wall charger is way more than that, and likely won’t be reliable, too.

But if you use the USB-C standard quite a lot, then this could be your go-to wall charger.

Summary:

Power:

The charging power from the ports is dynamic, indeed. As it’s able to output 18W of charging from each of its ports when you’re charging two devices at once. Or 30W when charging from just a single port at a time.

Design:

The charger has a distinctive look with its bright orange ports, and the size can be placed into a pocket.

Build:

The build quality of the charger is great, although it does heat up a little bit if you’re charging two devices at once or a single device, too.

Reliability:

The charger can provide different ranges of power depending on how many devices you’re charging. This can be highly beneficial if you use Power Delivery charging for your smartphone and also for a laptop that you may own.
