Most of us simply use portable chargers when it comes to charging our smartphones while we’re on-the-go. The portable charger is really one of the most useful charging electronics that you can use and that’s because they can go with you anywhere, but the negative part is that you have another device on you that you have to keep track of. However, there are portable chargers that blend seamlessly with the smartphone that you’re using and they’re called battery cases. Battery cases are just portable chargers but they’re in the shape of a case and so it’s a lot easier to use it without it being totally separated from your smartphone.

In this review, we’re going to be taking a look at this Elebase 5,000mAh Galaxy S8 battery case. This battery case has quite a lot of reviews over at Amazon and the charging power from the case is quite good when compared to other types of battery cases on the market. So let’s see if it’s worth getting.

Power

Power Capacity:

The power capacity of this Elebase battery is quite bit higher than most other battery cases for the S8 and that’s because it has a 5,000mAh power capacity. Now, this is a lot of power for a battery case but at the same time, don’t think that you’re getting the entirety of the capacity that this charger has, as power is lost during charging. So let’s figure out how much you’re actually able to use.

3.7 x 5,000 = 18,500 / 5 = 3,700

The amount of power that you’re really able to use from this charger is 3,700mAh, so it’s quite a bit lower than what you’re really able to use but at the same time, it’s a lot. Since the Galaxy S8 has a 3,000mAh battery, you’re able to charge the phone to its full power only one time, but the charger will still have a little bit more battery left.

Just remember though, our full charge estimate is based on not using yo S8 while it charges from the battery case. Using your S8 while at the same time charging it will result in more power capacity being used as the phone is still using battery power quite heavily.

Output Charging:

Most battery cases for modern smartphones have fast charging speeds, whereas in the past it would be rather normal for a battery case to have a 5V/1.0A charging rate, that doesn’t really cut it anymore. The reason for that is because many smartphones consume a lot of power and so having a slower charging rate would do almost nothing to charge the smartphone.

This Elebase has quite a fast charging speed of 5V/1.8A. So it’s still in the 1 amp range but it’s closer to 2 Amps and even though it’s not a Quick Charge charging rate, it’s still fast enough to charge your S8 at a noticeable speed.

Input Charging:

To recharge this battery case you have to use a USB-C port that’s located on the battery case and it has a recharge rate of 5V/1.8A, so the same as the output charging. If you want to recharge the battery case at its max charging speed, just make sure that you use a 5V/2.0A USB wall charger. This battery case does not feature wireless recharging.

Design

Size and Weight:

You would think that since this battery case has a 5,000mAh power capacity that the thickness of the case would be off the charts but that’s not the case at all. Instead, the dimensions of this are rather normal, and by that, we mean that the case will have quite a bit of bulk because it’s a battery case but not to the degree that we were expecting.

So the case has a length of 6 inches, and width of 2.7 inches and a thickness of 0.6 inches. The weight of the case is 4.5 Ounces. So you’re going to feel the thickness of the case the most when you place it into your pocket. Holding it in your hand, the thickness of the case actually provides a better grip.

Functional Components:

On the functional side, this case has a few different things going.

At the back, the power button and power capacity indicator are the same thing. The LED indicators on the power button change colors to indicate how much power capacity is left.

Gray – 75% – 100%

Green – 50% – 75%

Blue – 50% – 25%

Red – 1% – 25%

This is definitely an interesting take on how to tell power capacity but if you’re not used this type of design then you might be telling yourself that Blue means that you have a lot of power capacity left. Having four LED lights, as usual, would have been fine, but this is still quite interesting.

To start charging from the battery case, you have to hold the power button down for about 3 seconds and do the same thing to turn it off.

Perhaps one of the most notable parts is that the cut-outs for the bottom, headphones jack, mic, and speakers of the S8 have large and clear cut-outs. While most battery cases on the market simple make a mini hole and they usually require that you use a headphone jack extender.

Build

Structure and Material:

On the build side, the battery case does have most of the Galaxy S8’s sides covered and it even has a raised top and bottom bezel to prevent the screen from getting damaged. That said, the side bezels are very small and so we still advise caution with dropping the smartphone with the case on.

Tech:

On the tech side, the charger doesn’t get warm if you’re charging it a normal climate, but if you’re charging in a warm climate then the battery case does tend to get warmer.

Reliability

This Elebase battery case has a very high power capacity that can likely give you a full charge for your S8 and the charging rate is fast enough that it keeps up with the usage fo your S8 while it charges. The single light LED indicator takes some getting used to as you have to know what color means what, but it works well.

The only unreliable part is the smallness of the right and left bezels of the battery case as it compromises the left and right side of the S8 if it drops hard enough on either of the sides.

Summary:

Power:

The power capacity is enough to charge the S8 to full power about two times, and the charging rate is quite fast to keep up with the usage of the S8.

Design:

The cut-outs of the battery case are accurate and it doesn’t require that you use a headphone jack extender which we find to be a relief.

Build:

The build is pretty good structurally, but the sides bezels could have been a little larger.

Reliability:

The battery case has an ample amount of power capacity and it overall provides a straightforward user experience. The build on the sides could use some work though.
