Using a second monitor when using your laptop or computer is one of the best ways to increase productivity. With the use of two screens, you can have two windows open simultaneously; having two windows open simultaneously with a single screen is a massive headache. It’s not precisely multitasking, as much as it streamlines the way you work because you have easier access to the things you’re working on. However, the main concern is how you should go about setting up a second screen.

Should you get a dual-screen monitor mount or buy a second monitor to use with your desktop computer or laptop? One of the better and easier to use solutions is to use a portable monitor that is slim, easy to use, and rechargeable. That’s why we’re taking a look at this INNOCN 15.6 inch 1080p portable touchscreen monitor; we’ve spent some time working with the monitor, and overall, this is what most consumers are going to be happy with when it comes to using a second screen. Let’s see why that is.

What Included in the Box?

The most important thing to know is what you’re getting, and you’re getting the whole package that you need to take advantage of the INNOCN portable monitor, except for the laptop, computer, or device you plan on using with it.

The box includes the INNOCN portable monitor, an HDMI cable, USB-C to USB-C data cable, a USB-C to USB-C charging cable, a USB-C charger, a Protective sleeve that acts as the kickstand, a Quick Start guide, a warranty card, and a microfiber cloth.

Ports on the Monitor & Compatibility

You can either use the USB-C cable with your laptop or computer and connect it to the INNOCN portable monitor or use the HDMI cable to use the monitor. It depends on whether the device you want to use with the monitor features a Thunderbolt USB-C port or has access to an HDMI cable. That said, with the option to use either USB-C or HDMI for display connection, you can pretty much use this display with nearly all portable devices; this is true for devices such as the PS5, Xbox Series X, Nintendo Switch, tablets, smartphones, or cameras.

In our case, we tested the INNOCN monitor with a Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 laptop that has a simple USB-C port for charging and data transfer, but it’s not a Thunderbolt port and therefore can’t be used as a display port. Instead, we opted to use the HDMI port with the INNOCN monitor. We used the included HDMI cable that came with the monitor, resulting in the laptop and the monitor working perfectly together.

Built-in Battery

When using the monitor right out of the box, you should first check if the monitor is charged up. Also, yes, this INNOCN monitor does have a built-in 5,000mAh battery that can last up to four hours of use, and this is another reason why it’s a good idea to go with this monitor rather than one that always needs to be hooked up. However, if you want a constant power source without worrying about the monitor running out of power, you can use the included USB-C charger and cable to power the monitor; you should use the top USB-C port to charge the monitor.

Speaking of ports on the monitor, there are a few functional parts on the INNOCN monitor. At the top, you’ll find the power button and an LED indicator. To turn on or to turn off the monitor, you have to long-press the power button.

Settings Menu

Once the monitor is on and connected to your laptop, computer, or any other device that you’re using for displaying, you can press the power button once to open up the settings menu.

Right from the start of the settings menu, you can change the monitor’s brightness, contrast, and sound.

The settings Menu of the INNOCN monitor is extensive with it featuring the following settings:

  • Home – Go back to the settings menu
  • Profiles –  Different preset settings such as gaming, cinema, and a total of five other profiles to choose from.
  • Color Temperatures – Change RGB color selection of the monitor
  • Color – Adjust color saturation and sharpness
  • Type-C Signal Source – Select this setting if you’re using a USB-C port for displaying from your primary device.
  • HDMI Signal Source – Select this setting if you’re using an HDMI port for displaying from your primary device
  • OverDrive Function – Turns on the OverDrive function
  • DCR (Dynamic Contrast Ratio) Function – Makes dark colors darker and makes brighter colors more bright
  • OSD Function for transparency of settings panel – Change the clarity of the Menu
  • Battery Display – Turn on or turn off the battery display to show how much battery life is left
  • Reset – Restore Factory settings of the monitor
  • Exit – Exit the OSD menu

Now that we have the menu functions out of the way, to the right of the monitor is where you’ll find the up and down buttons that can be used with the OSD menu, and to the bottom side is where there are two USB-C ports and one HDMI port. As we mentioned before, you should use the top USB-C port for charging the monitor.

The middle USB-C port can be used to charge devices such as smartphones or tablets, or you can use the center USB-C port as a display port if the device you’re using with the monitor has a Thunderbolt port such as a Macbook. You cannot use the USB-C port to charge laptops as it’s not powerful enough. The HDMI port is what we used with the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 because the USB-C port on the laptop is not Thunderbolt. Overall, you’re getting an alright selection, considering that this is a portable monitor that you can take with you anywhere.

The monitor also has built-in stereo speakers, which is another benefit of owning this monitor rather than a regular one.

Also, when charging the INNOCN portable monitor, you can use the included wall charger or use a power bank to charge the monitor while you’re being mobile with it.

Quality of the Display

One of the main differences in usage of the INNOCN monitor is the viewing angle, as the monitor’s angle will always be slanted back. Therefore you won’t get the same leveled angle that you would with an ordinary mounted monitor. This can be a flaw for some, but in our experience viewing the monitor was easy.

So how is the quality of the display for this INNOCN monitor? It’s really good, and we don’t have any complaints. The display has a 1920×1080 FHD resolution with a 60Hz refresh rate. Turning on the monitor for the first time, you’ll find that colors are much more vibrant on the INNOCN monitor than they are for your primary display; at least, that was the case for us with the Lenovo Flex 5 laptop. If you find that colors are too different between the displays, you can easily adjust them on the INNOCN monitor. The brightness of the screen is alright with it being a 400nits display, it covers 100% of the sRGB color gamut, and it’s an IPS display; you may be disappointed that it’s not an OLED, but at the same time, if it were, the price of this monitor would skyrocket.

A significant feature of this INNOCN monitor is its touchscreen, which can be incredibly beneficial if you want to use the screen like a tablet or work faster with a touchscreen.

Increased Productivity with two Screens

Once connected to the portable montoir, you have a few options with the way you want to view your screen. With our test, we were using Windows 8, so you can choose to mirror, extend, or span your screen using the INNOCN monitor. Most of the time, you’re going to want to extend or span your display as you can have content fully open on both screens you’re using.

The build quality of this INNOCN portable monitor is incredible. You’d think that this is coming from a brand like Samsung or Apple, and that’s because it has a complete Andonized Aluminum chassis that gives the monitor some weight and makes it feel like a quality product. The power button and up / down keys also feel solid to use, which can also be said about the ports. It’s a well-built product, but you won’t notice the Aluminum build as it’s always going to be in the protective sleeve that’s included in the box to stand up the monitor.
