When it comes to car charging, most of the time they’re just chargers that you plug into a 12Volt outlet and you use a charging cable with the ports that the car charger has. That said, there are now different types of ways that you can charge your smartphone while you’re driving. We’re still talking about a car charger, but it’s more of a different type of car charger.

In this review, we’re going to be looking at iOttie’s wireless car charger car mount. This isn’t like your regular type of car charger that you’re familiar with. Sure, this is basically a regular car charger with its form factor and how you plug it into a 12-Volt outlet, but it’s the car mount attachment which makes this charger more than just a regular one. So let’s see what it has to offer.

Power

Output Charging:

There are actually two ways to charge from this car charger, There’s the Car mount wireless charging method or you can use the USB-A port on this car charger.

Wireless Charging Car Mount:

This the main reason that you should get this iOttie car charger, and that would be because of its wireless charging mount. First, though, you can only use the wireless charging if you have a Qi-Compatible smartphone which is basically a fancy way of saying a smartphone that can wirelessly charge.

The mount features fast wireless charging and this comes as a surprise because since this is a car charging mount, we thought it would feature standard wireless charging. The best part about powering the car mount part of this car charger is that the charger already has a built-in Micro-USB charging cable that you can use to power the wireless charging mount. Which mean that the built-in Micro-USB charging cable features Quick Charge, and can fully power the wireless charger to output fast wireless charging.

The fast wireless charging means that Qi-compatible Samsung smartphones are able to get 10W charging speeds. While the iPhone X and iPhone 8 are able to receive a 7.5W charging speed. For all other Qi-compatible smartphones, they will receive a 5W charging speed.

In addition to the built-in Micro-USB charging cable, and wireless charging car mount, this car charger also features a USB-A port that you can use with any charging cable. That said, the USB-A port is the weakest part of this car charger with it outputting only 5V/1.0A, but it’s still useful if you want to charge two devices at once.

Design

Size and Weight:

The size of the car mount is really what matters in this case, and you’re able to use any and all Qi-Comatpbiele smartphone on this car charger. You can of course still use this car mount for non-Qi Compatible smartphones too. As the car charger has an adjustable height and angle rotation. There’s a foot knob at the bottom of the car mount to make sure that the smartphone that you’re placing into this car mount is able to fit.

Functional Components:

Using this car mount is simple. First, you have to make sure that you have the car charger itself is connected to a 12Volt outlet to receive power. Then you can connect the built-in Micro-USB charging cable into the car mount to power the wireless charging on the car mount. The car mount itself has a adjust lowering knob so that you can lower or increase the height of where your smartphone sits.

The wireless charger on this car mount has just a single coil but that’s just fine as you’re able to place your smartphone exactly in the middle of the charger and keep it there with the side holders on this car charger.

At the top left corner of the car mount is where there’s a small LED light. When the LED light is Green it means that your Qi-Compatible smartphone is wireless charging. However, if it’s Red then it means that there’s an incompatible smartphone being used.

Build

Structure and Material:

The build quality of this car charger definitely says that it’s from iOttie. At least the car mount portion of the car charger does because it’s built very well. The suction cup of the car mount does a great job at staying put and we’re surprised just how strong it holds onto a flat surface because there’s a Wireless charger and a smartphone at the other end of it. However, just be sure that you’re placing the suction part of this car charger on a flat surface or else it won’t have a good hold.

Tech:

We were worried that this car charger may have overheating issues that might occur, but that’s not the case here with this car charger using ventilation holes at the back of the car mount. This way, the car charger does get less warm than it would without the vents.

Reliability

This iOttie wireless charging car mount is very reliable if you own a Qi-Compatible smartphone because you’re able to use an integral part of this car charger; which would be the car mount portion, where you can have your smartphone for easy viewing for navigation and charge it from there at the same time.

It’s also a plus if you have Samsung wireless charging smartphone, or an iPhone X / iPhone 8 because they’re both capable of Fast WIlrees charging, which this iOttie car mount features.

That said, if you don’t have a Qi-Compatible smartphone, then the car mount is really only a car mount and nothing more. However, at least, you’ve got built-in Micro-USB charging cable and a USB-A port that you can use..

The wireless charger features Fast Wireless charging for compatible devices, and at the same time, you can charge another device with the USB-A port.

Design:

The charger is simple to use with its use of a foot knob that allows for a lot of adjustabilities based on your smartphone, and it’s simple to lineup with your smartphone and the coil within the wireless charger. There’s also a LED light at the corner of the car mount that signifies when wireless charging is happening with a Green light or not with a Red light.

Build:

The build quality of this iOttie wireless charging car mount is one of the best out there, with its use of a vent at the back of the car charger to make sure that the wireless charger doesn’t overheat. Even during those hot Summer days.

Reliability:

This is a very reliable car charger if you have a Qi-Compatible smartphone and also want a car mount at the same time. This way you’re able to reliably charge your smartphone and have an easy viewing for your smartphone while you’re driving (for navigation of course. No watching movies while you’re driving!)
