Most of the time when it comes to portable chargers, many of us think of a charging electronic that is quite small and is really only capable of charging tablets and smartphones. It makes sense to think that too, as most portable chargers on the market just feature USB charging ports. However, there are portable chargers that do more than just that and that would be portable power stations.

These types of power banks are just like any other power bank on the market and at the same time, they’re much more than that. That’s because portable power stations feature a very high power capacity that you can use for a much longer duration. In this case, we’re here to review the Jackery Explorer 200Wh Outdoor Portable Power Station.

This is Jackery’s second power station, with their first one being the PowerPro, which actually features quite a little more than this Explorer. That said, let’s see what this lower tier portable power station has to offer with its power capacity and charging power.

Power

Power Capacity:

The power Capacity of portable power stations is going to be higher than just your regular high capacity power bank. That’s definitely true with this Jackery Explorer as it has a 57,600mAh power capacity, which regular power banks simply don’t feature. With that said, let’s see how much of this very high power capacity you’re actually able to use.

The batteries within this power station are rated at 3.6 Volts.

3.6 x 57,600 = 207,360 / 5 = 41,472

Even after the power conversion during charging with this Explorer power station, you’re still left with a lot of power capacity of 41,472mAh. It’s with this power capacity that you’re able to charge smartphones and tablets to their full power multiple times. That said, just charging a smartphone or tablet with this power bank isn’t the only reason that you should be getting his charger.

As it can also charge laptops too since it features a USB-C port. That said, this portable power station is only capable of charging USB-C compatible laptops that are able to charge within the 15W power range. Such as Apple’s USB-C compatible MacBook. However, with the amount of power capacity that you do have available, you can charge such devices to their max power multiple times too.

Then there’s powering and charging things through the 12 Volt DC car port which enable you to charge things such as Drone batteries. You can also power small appliances up to 200W, and as a result, the 41,000mAh power capacity is able to power it for about a 1 hour.

Output Charging:

There are three main ways that you can use this Jackery Explorer power station, let’s see what each of them has to offer.

Two USB-A Ports

There are two USB-A ports on this power station and each of them has a 5V/2.4A charging speed. At the same time, the max output of the USB-A ports is 5V/2.4A, so you cannot use the 2.4A charging speed at the same time with the ports.

Neither of the ports features Quick Charge. That said, 2.4A for standard charging is quite fast for standard devices and useful for USB chargeable device whether it’s smartphones or tablets.

USB-C Port:

The USB-C port on this power station is used with USB-C compatible devices such as smartphones, tablets, and laptops. One thing that some people might mistake this USB-C port to feature is Power Delivery. The USB-C on this charger has a 15W charging output, which is not Power Delivery.

However, it can charge devices such as USB-C compatible MacBooks, but not at their max charging speed. You should have no problems charging USB-C compatible smartphones like the Galaxy S8, Google Pixel and a bunch of the USB-C smartphones and tablets too.

Just remember that you’ll need a USB-C to USB-C charging cable to use this port, and luckily this Explorer power station actually comes with one.

DC 12Volt Car Port:

The one other output port is the 12 Volt Car port that has an output power of 12V/10A.

This is the main reason that you’re getting this power station as it’s capable of powering small appliances and charging things like Drone batteries. With all that said, this power station does not come with a car adapter to use to charge with your own devices and so you’ll have to supply that yourself. There’s simply a 12Volt car port on this charger that’s available to use.

Input Charging:

Recharging this Jackery Explorer Power Station is perhaps the most versatile part, even though it has just a single DC input port. However, it’s with this single DC input port that you’re able to recharge the power stations with an AC adapter, a car DC adapter or a Solar adapter if you choose to do so.

However, the Explorer only comes with an AC adapter that you can use within your home with an AC outlet, while you have to supply a car adapter or a Solar charger on your own.

The recharging speed of this charger is 12V/3.5A (42W), and it takes about 6-7 hours to fully recharge.

Design

Size and Weight:

If you’re going to get any portable power station then you have to be prepared for the large size and weight of it. This is truly where portable chargers and power stations differ, as there’s really no way that you’re able to hold this power station for a long duration and be comfortable with it.

As it has a length of 8.2 inches, a width of 6.3 inches, and a thickness of 1.9 inches. The weight of this power station is 5.1 Pounds. So it’s heavy and something that you would place into a bag and use once you’ve reached a place where you’re going to actually use it.

This is a portable charger, but it’s just so large that it’s not something that you would hold, and charge your smartphone with. It’s much more likely that you’re always going to be placing this Explorer down and then using it.

Functional Components:

One of the best user experience parts of this portable power station is that all of the ports are on a single side.

All of the ports include the two USB-A ports, single USB-C port, the DC input port, and 12Volt Car port.

While the other non-port functional parts are the power button, and digital power capacity indicator. You do have to press the power button when it comes to using this power station no matter what part you’re using. The use of a digital power capacity display is very helpful in telling how much power you have left to use, rather than just a couple of dots.

Build

Structure and Material:

The build quality of this power station is very good and this is something that you can expect from most Jackery products. At least in our experience. With this Explorer power station having good reinforcement with its structure, making it perfect for everyday use. It is not shockproof though and because of that, you should be careful not to drop it from a high height or onto hard-flooring.

Tech:

On the tech side, this power station does tend to get a little warm if you’re using many of the ports at the same time, and definitely if you’re using the DC car port at its max power.

Reliability

This power station is very reliable when it comes to charging devices, with its use of three output port types. However, even though the USB-C port and two USB-A ports on this charging station are very useful, the main reason that you’re getting this power station is that of its use of the 12 Volt car port. If you can’t find a use or the car port to charge Drone batteries or other types of devices, then it’s best to go for more of a  standard portable charger.

Or maybe you find the power capacity of this charger useful with its use of standard charging, then it can be very reliable in that way too.

Summary:

Power:

There’s a lot of power capacity to be used with this Jackery portable power station and so it can be used to charge smartphones, tablets, laptops and other types of batteries to full power multiple times over. There are three main ways to use this charger, but the USB-C port does not feature Power Delivery. The DC car port is the most useful part of this charger.

Design:

It’s very large and heavy, not something that you would take with you for a walk, and charge your smartphone with while you’re on the move. It’s at least very easy to use with all of the functional parts of the power station being on a single side.

Build:

The build quality of pretty good structurally, but it does get a little warm when you’re heavily using DC car port.

Reliability:

With its very high power capacity and charging methods, this Explorer power station can prove to be highly reliable. However, it won’t be reliable as much as it can be if you don’t use the DC car port.
