USB-C Power banks are becoming more common and this is mainly because there are more devices that are starting to use the USB-C way of charging and syncing.

If you don’t know yet, USB-C is a new charging technology that allows for faster charging and syncing with other devices, ultimately the USB-C tech will overcome the Micro-USB era and then USB-C will become the standard.

However, this change is somewhat slow but it’s coming and this is why many charging electronic companies have already made power banks with USB-C to make sure they’re ready for a faster-charging era.

This is the MGcool power bank not only uses USB-C to provide fast charging, but it also uses Quick Charge 3.0 from its USB port. Let’s see if this powerful power bank is indeed powerful.

Power

Power Capacity:

The MGcool power bank starts out with an initial power capacity of 16,000mAh and even during charging with its Output power capacity, it does lose much. That’s because the power bank uses LG batteries and they’re basically on the same level as Panasonic batteries.

If you’ve read our many other power banks reviews and more specifically Anker power bank reviews, then you probably know that Panasonic batteries are able to result in a better Output power capacity simply because they offer better conversion during charging.

Not only that but these kinds of batteries are able to hold much more of the batterie’s capacity even after many charging cycles. That’s basically why this power bank is able to pull off a 13,000mAh Output power capacity.

With a 13,000mAh Output power capacity, quite a lot can be done. You can charge most smartphones about 4 times or more, so it’s a great power bank to use with smartphones. Even you’re going into the tablet territory this portable charger can still hold up pretty well.

That’s mainly true for when you’re charging Mini tablets like the iPad Mini 2 and 4 because they can charge at least once with this charger. If you’re charging full-sized tablets then it’s going to take the entire power capacity of the MGcool charger.

Overall, there’s enough power capacity charge a range of different sized devices, and if you’re going with the most usual route of charging smartphones only, this charger can last for days without needing a recharge.

Output Charging:   USB Quick Charge 3.0 Port: 5V-6V/3A,6V-9V/2A,9V-12V/1.5A    USB-C Port: 5V-6V/3A,6V-9V/2A,9V-12V/1.5A

USB Quick Charge 3.0 Port:

The USB charging port is going to be the more used charging port on this power bank. This is because it can be used with any device that charges using USB and not only is it compatible for fast charging for Quick Charge compatible devices, but you can also use the Quick Charge port to charge standard charging devices at their max charging speeds.

This includes all the way to charge tablets at their max charging speeds of 5V/2.4A and any other smartphones that have a max charging speed under that as well.

As for Quick Charge compatible devices, this power bank is still compatible to charge Quick Charge 3.0 and 2.0 devices at their max charging speeds. With the higher level of charging being at 3 Amps with higher Voltage.

Even when Amperage goes down, the Voltage during charging goes up considerably which makes the charging speed constant; and that’s what Quick Charge is known for. Fast and CONSTANT charging speeds.

USB-C Port:

Then there’s the USB-C port that will most likely be used by only a handful of people. This is mainly because not many people yet own smartphones or other devices that recharge with USB-C. With that said, to use the USB-C port you’re going to need a USB-C to USB-C charging cable.

The charging speed that the USB-C port delivers is on the same level as the USB Quick Charge port and as a result, you can expect your USB-C compatible smartphones to charge at their max charging speeds.

Another thing that is quite useful is that you can even charge MacBooks that use the USB-C way fo charging and Chromebook Pixels as well. Although, the charging speed of the MGcool doesn’t exactly meet max charging speeds for large devices like those and so the charging will be rather slow.

Overall, the charging speeds that this MGcool power bank is able to deliver is objective and highly efficient charging.

If you own either a Quick Charge or USB-C compatible devices, or even better if you own both; then this power bank is going to be highly useful. Not only with its power capacity but the charging experience that it can deliver.

Input Charging:

The power bank is NOT recharged through the USB-C port, instead, there’s a Micro-USB Input port that’s used to recharge it. If you’re using a 2.4 Amp wall charger or higher, then you can recharge the power bank at its max charging speed. This way, the power bank will be fully recharged within 7-8 hours.

Size and Weight

It’s that large of power bank where you’d be forced into setting it down and yet it’s large enough that most of the time setting it down will seem like the most convenient option. It’s even thin enough that you could potentially fit it into your back pocket if you really wanted to.

It has a length of 6 inches, a width of 2.6 inches, and a thickness of 0.9 inches. So it may not be that large and as a result, you can very well hold this power bank in your hand. With that said, the weight of it is 11 ounces and that’s nearly a pound.

So, for the most part, it’s going to be up to you. holding it won’t really make sense unless you’re simply holding it to use it when you reach your location.

Although there’s the rubber wrapping that envelopes about 80% of the power that features many grooves on it and this makes the power bank very easy and comfortable to hold.

Functional Components

On the functional side, MGcool has a created a unique style to allow the user to realize where the functional parts. They did this by covering most of the power bank is rubber and having a small portion of the charger being really bright red.

This is where you’re going to find the charging Output and Input ports, as well as the power button. Charging automatically begins when you connect devices to the power bank and that mainly leaves the power button as a way to check the power capacity that’s left on it.

There are 4 LED power capacity indicators on top of the charger and a single green LED light that indicates when charging is going on.

More charging electronic companies should consider a light that indicates active charging because many people want to be ensured that their devices are indeed charging and don’t want to check their smartphone. Rather, than just check the light on the power bank itself.

It’s quite a useful features that not many other power banks make use of.

Build

Structure and Material

It’s not a rugged power bank, but it is a tough one. That’s because as we mentioned before, this power bank has rubber that covers the entirety of the charger. So if you were to drop it, then the shock would go into the rubber the part. Underneath the rubber is the Aluminum casing of the MGcool power bank and it’s quite tough as well.

A great charger for everyday use and it’s even better to have such a  large power capacity being so safe.

Tech

This charger features a lot of safety charging tech. With some of the main ones being Surge, Short-Circuit, and a Reset Control protection. There’s even more of an array of power bank safety tech features that are able to keep charging safe even when you’re using this power bank to its limits, and you can check them out below.

There’s also the usage of LG battery cells that are able to give better conversion during charging and allow the batteries to keep more of their capacity even in the long-term.

Reliability

It’s a reliable enough power bank for those that only own standard charging devices. We say this because if you’re not taking advantage of the fast Quick Charge or USB-C charging speeds, then you’re just paying a price of the power bank for nothing.

Sure you’ll be able to get fast charging with the USB Port but you can get just as fast charging with a standard power bank that offers Max standard charging speeds.

On the other hand, if you own either a Quick Charge or USB-C compatible devices, this power bank is highly useful as you’ll be able to charge your devices at a very fast charging speed. So the reliability for this MGcool power bank isn’t bad, but it will vary depending on what devices you’re using with it.

Summary

Power:

The power capacity is able to keep itself rather high with its usage of LG batteries that are efficient in providing great conversion rates. Charging options are all fast as a both the Quick Charge and USB-C charging speeds are both basically Quick Charge.

Even the Input is able to charge at a Max standard charging speed of 5V/2.4A.

Design:

It’s not too large and yet it’s quite heavy. For the most part, you’re going to want to set it down and use it, although the rubber wrapping with its texture makes it really comfortable to hold.

Another thing about the rubber wrapping is how it’s able to distinguish the location of the functional parts of the charger so well. The power bank makes use of a LED light that indicates when charging is happening.

Build:

It’s a tough enough power bank that it can withstand falls for those unfortunate times and that’s mainly because of the rubber around it being able to take the shock damage.

Reliability:

The reliability for this power bank shines the most when you’re using it with either Quick Charge or USB-C compatible devices. This is mainly because if you’re not using the special fast-charging technology then you’re not exactly getting your money’s worth.
