Wireless charging isn’t a new form of charging and it’s actually been around for quite a while. That said, with the release of the iPhone X and the iPhone 8, wireless charging has become more popular than ever as those are two very big smartphones that were released.

Not only that, they’re Apple’s first iPhones that are Qi wireless compatible. As a result, there are a lot of brands that took advantage of this and released new wireless chargers or improved on their already existing chargers.

One of the most famous brands on the market, Mophie, actually made a wireless charger that specializes in charging the iPhone 8 and iPhone X at their fastest charging rate with wireless charging.

It’s a smart move, while at the same time, this charger is still able to charge other wireless devices, but it’s just more geared towards those that own the new iPhones.

So let’s take a closer look to see if you should go ahead and pay for this highly “premium” wireless charger from Mophie, or go for something more affordable.

Power

Output Charging:

So, what makes this wireless charger a lot different than other wireless chargers on the market is that Mophie is making this charger seem like it’s solely for the iPhone X or the iPhone 8.

Well, that’s not the case, it’s compatible with any and all Qi compatible smartphones. However, this charger actually comes with its own AC power adapter brick, which is something that VERY few wireless chargers come with.

This is where we have a problem with this wireless charger because the AC power adapter that comes with this wireless charger has a charging cable connected to it and it’s a DC charging tip.

This makes absolutely no sense. Some people might say that it’s actually good that this charger comes with its own AC adapter because you can use it right out of the box without having to use your own wall charger.

Powered by a DC Connection? Hm?

You most likely already own a wall charger, and the fact that this Mophie wireless charger comes with an AC power adapter isn’t really the problem.

It’s the fact that they used a DC charging tip to power this wireless charger because if the cable starts to wear down, then you can’t use your wireless charger anymore and you’re going to have to contact Mophie to know how to get another one. That is an absolute hassle.

Or you could just get a wireless charger doesn’t use a DC port to be powered, and instead either uses a Micro-USB input or a USB-C input; both of which are a lot more universal and you can easily purchase a replacement charging cable for. IT DOESN”T MAKE SENSE.

Then there’s the charging power with this wireless charger and basically the main selling point of it. The charger is able to provide 7.5W (5V/1.5A) of charging power to the iPhone X and the Phone 8.

This is good and it’s true, that is the max charging rate when it comes to wireless charging for the new iPhones. If you’re charging either Samsung smartphones or any other Android Qi compatible smartphones, then they will charge at 5W (5V/1.0A).

It would have been nice for Samsung smartphones to have a 7.5W charging rate as well, but Mophie is really making this an iPhone focused wireless charger, and that puts a limit on it for other smartphones that also use Qi charging.

Input Charging:

As we mentioned before, this charger uses AC power adapter with a charging cable that has a DC charging tip. It must provide the same charging power for a Quick Charge wall charger (18W).

As this wireless charger is able to provide 7.5W of charging power. Still, it doesn’t make sense to use a DC port to be powered, when there are wireless chargers out there that accomplish the same thing with more universal methods of powering a wireless charger.

Design

Size and Weight:

The size and weight of a wireless charging pad is never going to be a problem. Or at least we hope not. Since this Mophie wireless charger has a length/width of 3.8 inches, and a thickness of 0.4 inches. The weight of this charter is 4.3 Ounces.

Functional Components:

Using this wireless charger is as easy as using most other wireless chargers on the market and that would be, easy. As you just plug the DC charging cable into the wireless charger, get it powered on and then it’s ready to use.

Once you place your smartphone on the wireless charger it begins charging and then a small green light near the bottom of the wireless charger turns on. The light is thankfully not bright at all and it won’t be bothersome while you sleep.

This charger features just a single charging coil, and that means you must place your smartphone in the center of the charger to make sure that you’re actually able to charge your phone.

Build

Structure and Material:

Despite its shortcomings with its use of a DC port to be powered, Mophie definitely knows how to make some very well built products. The entire wireless charger has a very premium feel to it and the plastic that’s used is very thick. At the top and bottom is where the charger uses rubber rings to keep itself and smartphone in place.

Tech:

During charging the wireless charger and your smartphone will get a little warm, but that’s the norm with wireless charging.

Reliability

If you own an iPhone X or an iPhone 8, then this Mophie wireless charger might be worth it, and the keyword is “might”. As it promises fast charging for your iPhone. At the same time, so do other, cheaper wireless chargers.

A part that makes it unreliable is that this wireless charger uses a DC port, and not a universal method of providing power. As a result, if your power cord breaks, then you can no longer use this wireless charger.

Summary:

Power:

Charging power for this Mophie wireless charger is pretty good, for iPhones… When it comes to all other Qi compatible smartphones you’re going to be getting the slow 5W charging rate.

Design:

It has a small size and lightweight. There’s a small Greenlight that comes on when you’re charging your smartphone, and it’s not disruptive at all.

Build:

The build is one of the best we’ve seen on any wireless charger.

Reliability:

Not very reliable for Samsung smartphones as it doesn’t feature Fast Wireless charging for them. The charger is powered by a DC port.

Specs of the Mophie 7.5W Apple Optimized Wireless Charge Pad:

  • Output:

Fast Wireless Charging for iPhone X / iPhone 8: 5V/1.5A

Standard Wireless Charging: 5V/1.0A

Samsung Fast Wireless Charging: Only Standard

  • Input:

DC Input

  • LED Power Indicator: Single LED Power Indicator
  • Size: 3.8 x 3.8 x 0.4 inches
  • Weight: 4.3 Ounces

Conclusion:

Mophie is a good brand, but at the same time, they clearly want to make people use their products and buy their accessories only.

As this wireless charger for some reason uses a DC port, instead of a Micro-USB or USB-C port. It simply doesn’t make sense, as that would have been a better choice for powering this Mophie Wireless Charging Pad.
