There are many brands on the market that sell charging electronics and it makes sense that’s the case because nearly everyone on the planet has a portable device that requires recharging. One of the most premium brands on the market when it comes to charging electronics is, Mophie. You may or may not have heard of them, but they absolutely dominate when it comes to battery cases for smartphones, and they make some great wireless chargers too.

In this review though, we’re going to be focusing on one of their portable chargers, specifically, their Powerstation USB-C XXL Power Delivery portable charger. Power Delivery charging tech is becoming the universal fast charging technology that’s being used for smartphones and also for laptops, which basically makes it a universal way to charge our portable devices. This Mophie Powerstation actually uses quite a bit more power than most other Power Delivery portable chargers on the market so let’s see if it’s worth getting.

Power

Power Capacity:

The power capacity of a Power Delivery portable chargers is usually high and the reason for that is because the assumption is that you’ll be using the power bank to charge laptops. That’s why this Mophie Powerstation has a 19,500mAh power capacity and it’s important to know that this is the initial power capacity and not what you’re really able to use.

As the power capacity of a portable charger goes through a conversion while you’re charging, so let’s see how much of it you’ll actually be able to use.

3.7 x 19,500 = 72,150 / 5 = 14,430

So this power bank actually has a 14,430mAh output capacity that you can actually use to charge your devices. If we’re talking about charging smartphones with this power bank that have an average battery capacity of 3,000mAh, then this power bank can charge them about 4.5 times.

Charging larger devices such as tablets and laptops, which might be the reason that you’re getting this power bank for in the first place, is going to result in about two full charges.

Output Charging:

On the charging side, there are two ways that you can use this Mophie Powerstation

It makes use of a USB-A port that has a standard charging speed of 5V/2.4A, which is fast standard charging speed that can charge most smartphones at a good rate. However, the USB-A port does not feature Quick Charge and cannot fast charge a Quick Charge compatible smartphone. Of course, the USB-A port on this power bank isn’t really the main focus in the first place.

The main focus is really the USB-C port which makes use of 30W of charging power and it’s with this port that you’re able to charge a USB-C MacBook at a fast charging speed. It’s going to be a lot faster than a standard USB-C port that can only output 15W and so it’s really a great portable charger if you want to have the ability to charge your laptop while you’re away from a stable source of power (AKA an AC Outlet).

Also, if you own a Power Delivery compatible smartphone, such as the Google Pixel 2, Galaxy S8 or the iPhone X, to just name a few, then you can also use the USB-C port to fast charge those phones too.

Input Charging:

The usual case when it comes to recharging Power Delivery portable chargers is that they can be recharged at Power Delivery speeds when you use a Power Delivery wall charger. Unfortunately, this Mophie power bank does not feature that, and instead the max recharging through the USB-C port is 15W.

So if you want to recharge this power bank at its max power then we recommend that you use a Quick Charge wall charger. Even so, it’s not nearly as fast as a Power Delivery recharging speed would be.

Design

Size and Weight:

The size of a Power Delivery portable charger is quite large in most cases, as they have high power capacities. That’s not really the case with this Mohie Powerstation as it has a length of 5.9 inches, a width of 3.3 inches and a thickness of 0.9 inches. The weight of the power bank is 13.7 Ounces.

So it’s not a mini power bank but for a high capacity portable charger, this is quite small and you’re able to hold it in your hand if you want to. Of course, it does have some weight to it though. With all that said, if you plan on charging a laptop with this power bank then you’re of course just going to be setting it down and using it.

Functional Components:

There are very few functional parts on this power bank and that’s a good thing as it makes it easier to use the charger. On one side of the power bank is where the USB-A port and the USB-C port are located.

Then at the top of the charger is where there’s a power button and four White LED power capacity indicators. You have to press the power button to begin charging from either of the two ports.

Build

Structure and Material:

The build quality of Mophie products has always been top notch and this power bank is no different. Sure the charger is basically made entirely of plastic but it doesn’t feel cheap and there are no loose with everything put together very solidly. Also, on the top side of the power bank is where there’s a cloth type of covering that makes it a great place to place a smartphone while you’re charging it.

Cloth on a power bank? Not common at all and it works quite well and it looks nice too.

Tech:

On the tech side, since this power bank features Power Delivery it does get a little warm if you’re using the Power Delivery charging for a long duration of time.

Reliability

On the reliability scale, this is a reliable power bank for charging Power Delivery compatible smartphones and larger devices such as tablets and laptops. The 30W UBS-C port is quite powerful to charge a USB-C MacBook at a fast charging speed.

At the same time, there are quite a few another alternative on the market that are actually lower-priced and more useful for the price that you’re getting.

We can give two major examples. One would be the Anker PowerCore+ 26800 Power Delivery portable charger. This power bank from Anker features an even higher power capacity and makes use of three charging ports. There are two USB-A ports that each have a 5V/2.4A charging speed. The USB-C Power Delivery port on this power bank has a 30W charging speed too, and to top it all off you can recharge it at Power Delivery speeds with the 30W Power Delivery wall charger that the power bank comes with.

Another Power Delivery wall charger that actually features the same power capacity is Jackery’s SuperCharge Power Delivery portable charger. This power bank has two charging ports, with one being a Quick Charge USB-A port and the USB-C Power Delivery port has a 45W charging speed. So that’s more Power Delivery charging power than what most Power Delivery power banks feature and it also comes with a 45W Power Delivery wall charger. All of that, and it still has a lower price than the Mophie Powerstation.

So the most unreliable factor of this Powerstation UBS-C XXL is that it doesn’t fit its price point for what it features.

Summary:

Power:

It has a high enough power capacity to charge smartphones to full power multiple times, and it also charges a laptop to full once or twice. The Power Delivery output charging is 30W but the recharging does not use Power Delivery and instead, the power bank can only be recharged at a 15W charging speed.

Design:

The power bank is rather small for a high capacity Power Delivery portable charger and it’s also very easy to use.

Build:

On the build side, this power bank is built very well and it only gets warm once you’re charging with Power Delivery for a long duration of time.

Reliability:

This power bank is truly overpriced and there are quite a lot of alternatives on the market that feature more power capacity, charging options and also come with a Power Delivery wall charger to recharge at Power Delivery speeds.

Specs of the Mophie Powerstation USB-C XXL Power Delivery Portable Charger:

  • Power Capacity: 19,500mAh | Output Capacity: 14,430mAh

USB-C Input: 15W
