Power strips are one of the most common household appliances you can have, and you have to wonder why you’d need to consider purchasing a certain one. However, at this point, many power strips now come with charging ports built into them, and you may want those as opposed to power strips that only have AC outlets.

In this review, I’m looking at this NTONPOWER power strip with four AC outlets and two charging ports, including a USB-A port and a USB-C Power Delivery port. Owning a power strip that uses a USB-C PD port can be incredibly reliable because the phone, laptop, or tablet you use can likely charge from a USB-C port; also, with built-in ports, you don’t have to use an AC outlet on a wall charger.

Output Power

Alright, so there isn’t anything complicated regarding the NTONPOWER power strip. As I already mentioned, it has four AC outlets and two charging ports. On the AC outlet side, the max output is 1250W, and yes, this is a bit lower than some power strips are capable of, so that is something to note. In my testing, I used a Lasko heater with a power strip and a watt meter to measure the wattage output.

I first set the heater to low, which has an 850W output, and it ran fine; then I set the heater to high, which has an output of about 1400W. I thought the power strip would automatically shut off and stop providing power. However, the power strip kept supplying power with no problems. I’m not sure if the 1250W max output is more of a recommendation, but that’s what it seems like, as I was about 150W over the max output, and the heater was running perfectly. I’m not complaining, as this is such a small power strip and could still supply 1400W.

While I had the heater running on high, I also tested the charging ports. I first plugged in a Lenovo Flex 5 laptop to the 45W USB-C port, and the laptop could charge at about 25W, which is what I expected. Then I plugged in a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 to the USB-A Quick Charge port, and the Lenovo laptop dropped to a 3W charging speed, and the Note 9 was only able to the standard charge.

The drop in charging power happened because when charging two devices simultaneously from the ports, the USB-C port’s output drops to 30W, and the USB-A port drops to 12W. So when I unplugged the Lenovo laptop, the Note 9 began to fast charge from the USB-A port.

So I could charge my Lenovo laptop at its max speed when charging it alone or charge two devices simultaneously while still powering a heater at its high setting, which pulled about 1400W from this 1250W rated NTONPOWER power strip. I’d say that it exceeded expectations.

Size and Weight

The power strip part is small, with just a length of 5.1 inches, a width of 2.8 inches, and a thickness of 2.6 inches. The unit weighs 10 ounces. It’s small, and I had no trouble finding a place to put it in my review.

The biggest flaw of this power strip is its power cord length of 4 feet. Yes, I know; if the power cord were longer, the power strip piece would have to be larger because it wraps around the power strip for those times you’re not using it. That said, a 4-foot power cord is not enough, in my opinion, as it barely gives you enough leeway from the wall outlet that you’ve plugged into. It’s a great power strip, but a long power cord could be a huge improvement.

Functional Components

It’s just like using any other power strip on the market. All you have to do is plug in the power strip to a wall outlet, and you’re ready to use it. It would have been nice to possibly have a small light to indicate that it’s receiving power and ready to use, or perhaps a power button to turn it on or off, but that’s not the case here. It’s plug-in and use.

Structure and Material

The build quality of this power strip is good. It seems only to be made of plastic. When I wrapped up the power cord around the power strip, I noticed that the power cord’s angle had a sharp bend, so make sure that the power cord isn’t too bent to prevent damage. There are rubber pads at the bottom of the power strip.

Tech

On the technical side, you must know that this power strip does NOT feature Surge Protection. This is mainly a travel power strip.

Reliability

For the most part, I’d recommend getting this NTONPOWER power strip if you want to travel with it or if you want to keep it close by where you work, such as your home office or even your own office space at work. It can go over this 1250W max output, and the charging ports are a definite selling factor of this power strip, although it would have been nice not to have a trade-off of charging power when charging two devices simultaneously.

Conclusion

The NTONPOWER 45W GaN USB-C power strip is a neat device. It doesn’t have the most power output or charging ports, but it is small and dependable. I think it’s a good power strip to have for traveling if you don’t want to bother with a wall charger and want an extra two AC outlets.
