          High capacity portable chargers may not be the most desired type of power banks. Sure, they have large power capacities that can potentially last for days but they’re simply not that portable. It’s best to go for a smaller charger if you plan to be on the go for charging reasons.

          With that said, a high capacity power bank is still capable of great feats. They are able to provide plenty of value not only their high power capacities.

          The high capacity battery pack that we’re reviewing is a RAVPower 20,100mAh power bank that has more than just what’s expected. It brings new things to the portable charging field that’s becoming more apparent with these kinds of chargers.

          As we already mentioned, this portable charger has a power capacity of 20,100mAh. Of course, like nearly all power banks, that’s not the actual power capacity that you’ll be receiving.

          Instead, the capacity of this charger is quite varied. Since it has a few different charging options, the charger’s capacity can change the way you use it. Let’s say you’re charging 3 devices at the same time, then the capacity will be a lot lower than the original 20,100mAh power capacity.

          However, assuming that most people will use this power bank in a moderate way and as a result, the real capacity that you’re most likely to get is 17,100mAh. This is mostly due to the charging options and how fast the charging is.

          Charge Smartphone and Tablets Numerous Times

          The faster the charging that you get, the more power that will be dissipated through the charging current.

          So there’s really no way to pinpoint the power capacity but it’s still a lot of power that will last you longer than lower capacity charges. The power bank can charge smartphones about 4 times or more and tablets can charge 2 full times.

          Some tablets with lower power capacities can charge even more times. You can expect to keep using this power bank without needing to recharge it, for a few days or even a full week if you’re using it scarcely. Ultimately, even with the power that’s lost during charging, you can expect this power bank to still live up to its high capacity.

          iSmart Port: 5V/2.4A

          Quick Charge port: 5V/2.4A, 6.5V-9V/1.5A, and 9V-12V/1.2A

          Charging speed can vary depending on what charging ports you’re using but ultimately charging speed from this power bank has fast charging.

          iSmart Port (Output)

          There two USB charging ports. One charging port is RAVpower’s iSmart tech and is able to charge at 5V/2.4A charging speed; which is the max standard charging rate.

          Quick Charge (Output)

          The other USB charging port uses Quick Charge 3.0 and also Quick Charge 2.0. The charging speed of the Quick Charge port isn’t exactly the traditional charging speed that you would expect from Quick Charge. This is because the charging speed can be 5V/2.4A, 6.5V-9V/1.5A, and 9V-12V/1.2A.

          The charging speed for Quick Charge is solid in the voltage department and as a result, you can expect the charging speed to be constant for the Quick Charge compatible device that you connect to it. However, the Quick Charge charging speed doesn’t deliver 3 Amps of charging, which Quick Charge is known for.

          Even so, the increased voltage makes the Amperage delivery to your device more stable and ultimately delivers faster charging.

          Type-C (Output)

          Another charging Output port that this power bank has is the Type-C port that can act as an Output and an Input.

          For the Type-C port to be an Output, you must have a Type-C to Type-C cable. This means that the device that you charge with the Type-C port, should be Type-C compatible. The charging speed of the Type-C port is 5V/3.0A, which is very close to Quick Charge speeds.

          The best part of the Type-C port is that you can charge newer MacBooks that use the Type-C cable. This means that this charger can charge a MacBook, a smartphone, and a tablet all at the same time. This power bank is able to offer an optimum charging experience with all the fast and versatile features.

          There’s fast Recharging

          Lastly, the recharge on this power bank is extremely fast. You can either recharge the power bank using the Micro-USB input or the Type-C Input.

          The Micro-USB input can recharge the power bank at 5V/2.0A as long as you’re using  2 Amp wall charger or higher. The Micro-USB charging will recharge the power bank to full in about 8-9 hours

          Then there’s Really Fast Recharging

          However, if you want to recharge the power bank really quickly, then use the Type-C Input. When you use the Type-C Input to recharge the power bank along with a Quick Charge wall charger, then the power bank will recharge at a rate of 5V/3.0A.

          The Type-C charging will recharge the power bank in about 4.5 hours. So if you want this power bank to be on full throttle as soon as possible, then you should use a Quick Charge wall charger and a Type-C to USB-A charging cable.

          Design

          Size and Weight:

          The larger the power capacity is with a power bank, the larger the size of the charger will be. This is the standard rule when it comes to power bank design, and this statement rings very true with this charger.

          It has a length of 6.8 inches, a width of 3.1 inches and a thickness of 0.8 inches. It’s quite a long charger but that’s not the most important aspect of its design.

          The weight of the charger is 13 ounces. So it’s heavy but it’s actually relatively lighter than other portable chargers of its size. Most portable chargers with its capacity weigh a full pound or more. So with its dimensions and weight, it’s not the best option to hold it in your hand.

          However, it’s best to use this portable charger in a not so portable way by setting it down and using it.

          Considering that you can charge 3 devices at the same time, the charger is really meant to be used as a charging hub.

          Portable chargers like these are still portable but more in relation to long distance traveling. Use it as a wall charger but it gives you a lot more freedom of where you can place your charger and the fact that you can have your devices right next to you.

          Functional Components:

          You can find all the charging components of the charger on the same side. The USB Type-C and Micro-USB Input are right next to each other.

          The same goes for the USB charging ports, with them also being right beside each other. Then there’s the power button and 4 LED Power indicators on top of the charger.

          It’s a very simple design that makes the power bank really easy to use because no matter how many devices you’re charging with it, all the charging cables are coming from nearly the same place. This way, you can adjust where you want your charging devices to be placed.

          Structure and Material:

          The entirety of the charger is made of plastic. There are three main pieces of the charger.

          The main centerpiece where all the charging ports are, and then there’re the two panels at the top and bottom for the charger. Overall, the RAVPower’s build is structurally strong and doesn’t have any pieces that will easily become loose and fall. T

          he functional components of the charger are the same, they function constantly.

          Tech:

          Inside the high capacity, the portable charger has lots of safety tech and it’s very necessary when you have a power bank with a high capacity and with all the charging options.

          It features the main kind of safety techs like Temperature control, Over-Current Control, Over-Voltage control and many others that ensure that your device or devices are safe as they charge.

          However, with the fast charging that this power bank offers, the Temperature can actually rise pretty high and result in the output power capacity to fall well below the advertised power capacity.

          This charger uses Panasonic battery cells and if you’ve read our other reviews for a few other power banks, I mention that Panasonic battery cells are the best kind of batteries to use. This is because they have a better conversion rate and are more long-lasting in the long-term.

          Reliability

          Nearly all high capacity portable chargers are reliable. They’re able to offer a high capacity that can be relied on for days or weeks. The charging capabilities that comes with these kinds of charges are what makes them so great. They’re able to charge many devices at the same time.

          All the traits above are what this charger has. Its capacity will last you long and it has enough charging options that will allow you to potentially charge 3 devices at the same time.

          However, the charging options can be used to their full capabilities if you’re using them correctly. Unless you have a Macbook or smartphone that uses Type-C to charge, then the Type-C port will only be used to recharge the power bank.

          The Quick Charge USB port can be taken full advantage of if you have a Quick Charge compatible device. It’s a power bank with options but those options have certain requirements to be used fully. Even so, the charger can still charge quickly when you use the Type-C port to recharge it and can end up with a full charge in 4.5 hours.

          When it comes to the portability, the charger does well enough. Its dimensions are large and its weight at nearly one pound that can make it difficult to carry in a single hand. But it’s more convenient to place it down and use it as a charging hub.

          The portability is the most reliable when you consider the possibility of charging three devices at once, as they’re close to your proximity.

          With that said, the charger has mostly a 17,100mAh capacity that can last for days and weeks as it can charge smartphones and tablets multiple times. The charging speed from each other the ports is fast and you can even charge a MacBook with it through the Type-C port. You can even use the Type-C port as either an Output or Input.

          Design

          A capacity is destined for a large-sized power bank and that rings very true here. It’s quite long at 6.8 inches and is nearly a pound at 13 ounces.

          It’s going to be cumbersome to carry it in your hands but it’s going to provide the best experience if you use it in one place as a charging hub. Just imagine charging 3 devices at once and not worrying about them running out of battery power.

          Build

          The entirety of the structure is made of plastic and only has 3 pieces that hold it together, so it’s very solid.

          Inside there are plenty of safety features that make the power bank safe to use even for the long-term. It uses Panasonic battery cells that can make the battery last longer.

          Although with the fast charging, the power bank can heat up even with Temperature Control and as a result, it loses a lot of its capacity if the charging speed is at a fast rate.

          Reliability

          The reliability of the charger is good, like most portable chargers with a lot of power capacity. It can last long without needing a recharge, and when you do need to recharge it, you can use either the Type-C port to fully recharge it in 4.5 hours.

          The charging options provide a fast charging experience but to take full advantage of the charger, you’re going to need a device that can use Type-C. To use the Type-C port as an Output, you’re going to need a Type-C to Type-C cable, and a Type-C compatible device.

          The power bank also has a Quick Charge port that can be used with Quick Charge compatible devices to charge them at a very fast speed. However, if you don’t have those things, that’s okay, the charger is still very capable of providing fast charging experience through the USB ports.

          Conclusion:

          This new generation of high capacity portable chargers is looking bright. Power banks with these kinds of capacities are able to be closer to their advertised capacity and they’re able to provide fast charging tech.

          The most advantageous thing is definitely the option to use the Type-C port as an Input and Output. By doing so, the charger is able to create 3 ways to charge at the same time and opens new kinds of devices to charge.

          In this case, it’s a MacBook. When these kinds of portable chargers are improved upon, the future of high capacity power banks can only get better.
