Portable Car Jump Starters are one of the best portable chargers that you can own.

That’s because they’re still like any other power bank on the market but these can jump-start your car just in case your battery dies while you’re at your destination.

However, since the demand for these types of chargers is quite high, it has led to many brands hastily joining this segment of portable chargers. As a result, the quality of portable car jumpers isn’t as good as you might think.

That’s why we’re reviewing this RAVPower 8,000mAh Element Series Portable car jump starter.

It’s from a brand that is quite well-known on the market and therefore we think this is a good option for those looking for a reliable and well-built portable charger that they can use to jump-start their vehicle and at the same time, this power bank has a little extra for those that own Quick Charge compatible devices.

Power Capacity:

This portable car jumper has a good amount of power, but it’s not the highest that you can get with a portable charger that can jump-start your car. However, the capacity of this charger is what contributes to the smaller and more portable side of it as it has an 8,000mAh power capacity.

When it comes to the conversion rate of this power bank, it’s going to depend on how you use it. The charger has only a single USB port and it features Quick Charge, therefore, it can charge Quick Charge compatible smartphones at their max charging speed.

Firstly though, we’re going to calculate how much regular output capacity you’re going to get with this charger.

3.7 x 8,000 = 29,600 / 5 = 5,920

Most of the time when you’re charging just regular devices (smartphones that are not compatible with Quick Charge), you’re going to have about 5,900mAh of power capacity available to charge your phone.

However, if you’re charging a smartphone that uses Quick Charge then the conversion of energy will be worse and that’s because faster charging is happening. As a result, you’re likely going to get an output capacity of 4,000mAh for Quick Charge compatible devices.

To sum it up, you’re likely going to get about two full charges for regular charging devices, and Quick Charge devices are likely only going to be able to get about a single charge or 1.5 full charges.

Capacity for Jump-Starting Cars:

The power capacity with power bank for jump-starting 12V/2.0L cars is quite good. As from its full capacity of 8,000mAh, you’re able to jump-start a car about 3 times if you wanted to. However, just something to keep in mind is that you should have a good amount of power left with this power bank if you do expect to jump-start your car.

It’s wise to have at least half or a little more than have the capacity with this charger to jump-start your vehicle.

Output Charging:

The single port on this RAVPower Element Series Car Jump Starter is quite powerful.

It has a standard charging speed of 5V/2.4A that can charge most standard devices at their max charging speed.

If you’re charging Quick Charge compatible devices then the charging port will output 5V/2.4A, as well as 9V/2.0A. So you’re able to achieve a faster-charging speed.

Power for Jump-Starting Cars:

RAVPower advertises this portable jump-starter as having enough power to jump-start cars with 12V batteries and 2.0L engines. Also, this portable charger can supposedly only jump-start cars that require 300A of power.

This power bank has a 150A starting current and a Peaker Current of 300A.

However, many users have reported that this power bank can jump-start cars that require 400A of power and that means this portable charger is more powerful than RAVPower is letting on. We think this is a great thing as you’re able to use it with more vehicles just in case of an emergency.

Input Charging:

The power bank is recharged through a Micro-USB input port that has a recharge rate of 5V/2.0A. You should use a 2 Amp USB wall charger to recharge it as fast as possible.

Design

Size and Weight:

Most portable car jump-starters are quite large, but this one with its rather low power capacity is on the smaller side. Sure it’s still big and heavy, but in terms of being able to jump-start your and charge your portable devices, it has a good form factor to it.

This power bank has a length of 6.7 inches, a weight of 3.2 inches, and a thickness of 0.8 inches. The weight of this charger is 1.1 Pounds. So it’s not meant for holding and charging your smartphone. Instead, you’re going to want to keep this power bank in your car just in case you ever come back to a car that requires a jump-start.

Functional Components:

This power bank has quite a few functional parts that are a bit over the place.

On the top siding of this power bank is where you’ll find quite a bright LED flashlight and the Micro-USB input port. On one long side is where the USB-A output charging port is. Then on the opposite long side of the charger is where the jump-start connection can be found.

On top of the power bank is where you’ll find the power button and four LED power capacity indicator lights that are each labeled with increments of 25%.

To start charging you just press the power button once. To turn on the LED flashlight you can just press the power button twice a little quickly.

To jump-start your car, you have to connect the jumper cable adapter, connect the jumper cables to your battery and wait for the Green light to come, and then you can crank your car to start it. If the light is Red then it probably means that you need to switch your connection with your adapter.

Build

Structure and Material:

The build quality of this power bank is very good. It has a few large screws that are in four corners of the charger. The feel of the charger is also great when it comes to using it.

Tech:

Thankfully, there have been no reports of the power bank’s batteries expanding.

The reason that we say that is because when it comes to most portable car jump-starters after you crank your vehicle the power output from the portable charger is so much that the batteries actually expand and practically breaker the portable charger.

This one does not and that means RAVPower did a great job making sure the tech specifications complied with the use of this power bank.

Reliability

It’s a very reliable portable charger with its use of a powerful charging port that can charge both standard devices and Quick Charge devices at their max charging speed.

Of course, the main reason that you’re getting this power bank is that it can jump-start your car and that shows a heavy amount of reliability as you may never know when your battery may be dead.

This power bank can likely jump-start cars that are out of its jump-starting capabilities, which puts it past its reliability limits.

Summary:

Power:

It has a good amount of power capacity, but ultimately, this charger is meant for jump-starting cars rather than to be solely used to charge smartphones. The USB charging port is quite powerful with its use of Quick Charge.

Design:

The size is large and heavy, and so it’s best to place this power bank in your car just in case of an emergency.

Build:

Build quality is solid with very large screws being used and the best part is that the power bank has no reported expansion of batteries, which is common among portable car jump-starters.

Reliability:

The reliability of this charger is quite good, but it has does a few faults and that would mainly be its power capacity. It has a low capacity in comparison to most other portable car jump-starters and that can be a problem if you want to charge your smartphone a few times over and at the same time jump-start your car a few times all with the power capacity charge.

Specs of the RAVPower 8,000mAh 300A Element Series Car Jump Starter:

  • Power Capacity: 8,000mAh
  • Output: 5V/2.4A | 9V/2.0A
  • Input: 5V / 2.0A
  • LED Power Indicator: Yes
  • Size: 6.7 x 3.2 x 0.8 inches
  • Weight: 1.1 Pounds

Conclusion:

There’s quite a lot of utility with this power bank and that’s what matters most. If you’re mostly going to be using it for jump-starting vehicles in case of an emergency then we say, go for it.
