There are quite a few charging technologies out there on the market that are able to charge certain devices at a faster-charging speed. Most of the time when it comes to USB chargeable devices such as our smartphones, we just settle for any USB port that can charge it. It makes sense, it’s just charging, right? Well, it could be better for the device that is compatible with the charging tech that’s supposed to charge a smartphone at a faster-charging speed.

We’re also at a point where smartphones and tablets aren’t the only devices that are able to charge at a faster charging speed. As there are now laptops such as the MacBook and Chromebooks that have started to use USB-C. Even gaming consoles like the Nintendo Switch have now begun using USB-C, too.

The Satechi USB charging station is basically an answer to all the charging tech that goes with USB charging. That’s because it has two major charging technologies and that would be Quick Charge and Power Delivery. In addition to that, this charger also uses two standard ports. So it just might have it all.

So let’s take a closer look to see if this charging station is meant for you, or if it’s simply just too much.

Power

Output Charging:

Charging power with this Satechi charging station is absolutely the best part of it and it’s the reason that you’re going to want to purchase this charger in the first place. That said, let’s take a closer look at what each of the ports is capable of.

USB-C Power Delivery Port

Power Delivery is the type of charging tech that is going to become increasingly universal among portable devices, and that’s because it’s used with USB-C. USB-C is basically the new connection type that’s used with newer smartphones, tablets, laptops and other devices too. USB-C offers faster base charging. To take it to another level, there’s USB-C Power Delivery which certain devices that use USB-C are compatible with, and it requires that you use a USB-C to USB-C charging cable.

Power Delivery is basically able to provide lots more charging power and most Power Delivery chargers offer 30W of charging power. 30W is still quite a good amount of charging power, but at the same time, it’s not the highest. This Satechi charging station is proof of that and that’s because it’s able to output 60W of charging power. Basically, double than the standard 30W of Power Delivery charging.

So charging a larger device such as the MacBook or new Chromebooks that use USB-C, this charger will charge them at their max charging speed, or very close to their max speed. Smaller Power Delivery compatible smartphones such as the Google Pixel 2, Essential Phone and even the iPhones X and iPhone 8 are able to charge at their max charging speed using this port. Yes, the iPhone X and iPhone 8 are compatible with Power Delivery, you just have to use a USB-C to Lightning charging cable.

Quick Charge

The other powerful charging ports on his charging station are the Quick Charge port. Of course, this port’s potential is only fully usable if you own Quick Charge compatible devices. As that’s what it’s really meant for. That said, you can also use this Quick Charge port to charge standard devices as well and it’ll have a charging rate of 5V/2.4A for that device.

Even if you can’t find a use for the Quick Charge port with a Quick Charge compatible smartphone, this charging station is still very useful because the USB-C Power Delivery port’s charging power of 60W is what makes the charger the most valuable.

Two Standard USB-A Ports

The final two ports that we have to touch on are the two standard ports. Each of them is able to output a charging speed of 5V/2.4A. These two ports are great for charging Non-Compatible Quick Charge and Power Delivery devices. As they still have a fast standard charging speed.

Max Output:

The max output of this Satechi charging station is 75W. That’s a very high max output but at the same time, it does not mean that you can use each of the ports on this charger at their max power. That’s because the USB-C Power Delivery has a max output of 60W, then the Quick Charge port has 18W of max power, and each of the two standard ports has 12W of power.

If you add up the max power of each port then you get a 102W output, which is well beyond the max power limitations of this charging station. Of course, just because the max output of Power Delivery is 60W doesn’t mean that you’re going to be using that much, it just depends on the charging power needs of the device that you’re charging it with.

Design

Size and Weight:

The size of this charging station, just like most others on the market is larger than wall chargers, but at the same time, it won’t be a problem. It has a length of 4 inches, a width of 2.6 inches, and the thickness of this charger is 1 inch. The weight of the charger is 13.1 Ounces.

So overall, the size of the charger isn’t large at all and it’s perfect for placing on your desktop and having it close by to charge your devices. That said, the one surprising part is the weight, but it does make sense with the tech that goes into the build of this charger and the entirety of the charging station is made of Aluminum and not plastic.

Functional Components:

Using this charging station is very simple, the power cord for the charger goes on at the back and it’s about 6 feet long. All of the charging ports are on a single side, starting from the top and going to the bottom is where you’ll find the USB-C port, a Quick Charge port, and the two standard ports.

 

Above the USB-C port is where there’s a Blue LED power light that shows the charging station has been plugged in. Above the light is where there’s a lights sensor. When there’s a lot of light in the room the LED light brightens up so you can see it better. When there is less light then you can barely see the light as it’s very dim.

Build

Structure and Material:

The structure and material of this Satechi charging station are very good and that’s because it has an Aluminum construction centerpiece, something that most charging stations do not use.

Tech:

This charger will get warm if you’re using the Power Delivery charging from it, and that’s really what we expect, especially if you’re using a lot of the Power Delivery at 30W and beyond of charging power, then it’s quite a lot and does cause heat to form. It doesn’t get hot, it just gets warm.

Reliability

The reliability of this charging station depends on whether or not you’re going to be able to make use of the charging tech that this charger uses. First thing is that if you’re able to make use of the USB-C Power Delivery charging, then you should absolutely consider getting this charger. That’s because it outputs 60W of power, which basically covers a lot of charging for multiple devices that use Power Delivery.

Then if you can make use of the Quick Charge port that’s even better.

If you can’t find a use for the Power Delivery port with any of the devices that you’re using then it’s best to sit this one out, as using a Quick Charge compatible device with the Quick Charge port wouldn’t even be enough of a reason.

Using this charging station is very easy and it’s awesome that they implemented a light sensor to dim or brighten the LED light on this charging station.

Build:

The build quality of this charging station is great as it’s made of Aluminum. It does get a little warm when you use Power Delivery but that’s to be expected.

Reliability:

The reliability of this charging station is very good if you’re going to be using the Power Delivery capabilities. If not, then it’s best to look for a lower priced and more simple charger.
