Micro-USB is a type of charging connection that’s used with many devices on the market and that’s true for smartphones, tablets and other portable devices. It’s an easy way of recharging devices and is basically one of the most common connections that you can find on various devices. That said, there’s a new type of charging method that is now available and that would be USB Type-C or also known as Type-C/USB-C. The USB-C standard of charging is now being used with most if not all new Android smartphones on the market.

Actually, USB-C is so powerful is that it’s now being used with tablets and even laptops such as the MacBook and the Chromebook are now using it. Also, many of the charging electronics that we use, such as USB wall chargers, portable chargers, and car chargers now use USB-C as it’s becoming the new standard. However, if there is one charging electronic that hasn’t implemented this new charging tech it would be wireless chargers. Most wireless chargers on the market are still powered through Micro-USB input port.

This Tronsmart AirAmp Dual Coil wireless charger is one of the very few wireless chargers that actually uses USB-C with its input at the time of writing this review. So let’s see what else it has to offer with its forward way of tech.

Power

Output Charging:

Charging speed with wireless chargers aren’t going to be as powerful as charging you’d get with wired charging, but that doesn’t mean that wireless charging has to always be slow. Especially for Samsung smartphones. That’s because Samsung Qi compatible smartphones are able to charge fast wirelessly when you use a Fast Charge wireless charger, which this Tronsmart wireless charger is capable of.

The thing with Fast Charging wireless chargers is that you must use a Quick Charge wall charger in order to receive the fast charging speed for your smartphone.

Another part that’s important to know that this Tronsmart AirAmp wireless charger is only able to provide fast wireless charging to Samsung smartphones, as other brand Android smartphones will only receive a charging rate of 5V/1.0A, rather than a 5V/2.0A charge rate that a Samsung smartphone would.

The same is true for charging the iPhone X and the iPhone 8 with this charger. However, when it comes to wireless charging with the iPhone X and the iPhone 8 you’re actually able to have Fast Wireless charging of 7.5W (5V/1.5A) with chargers that are made to accommodate the charging speed for the iPhone. This Tronsmart charger doesn’t do that though, and so if you do own a Qi Compatible iPhone then we recommen purchasing a wireless charger that is able to charge it at its max charging rate when it comes to wireless charging.

Overall, the charging power with this Tronsmart charger is good for Android smartphones in general, yes, it really is. Even if you don’t own a Samsung smartphone, the use of its USB-C input makes it even more worth getting this wireless charger as it’s likely that you’re using USB-C for charging your smartphone.

Input Charging:

One the main highlights of this Tronsmart charger is that it uses USB-C for its input, something that not many other wireless chargers currently do. This is big because USB-C is the new standard of charging and connectivity that a lot of new devices are using so it’s great this wireless charger does it so that you don’t have to worry about moving back to using a Micro-USB cable.

That said, this wireless charger comes with a USB-C to USB-A charging cable, but it does not come with a Quick Charge wall charger. So you have to purchase a Quick Charge wall charger separately.

Design

Size and Weight:

In the images, this wireless charger actually looks like it has decent size to it, that said, that’s not really the case as in reality, as this wireless charging stand is actually very small. It has a height of 4.6 inches, a width of 2.9 inches, and a depth of 2.5 inches. The weight of the charger is 10.2 Ounces.

So it’s actually very small but at the same time, the charger has some weight to it or at least more weight than what most wireless chargers have.

Functional Components:

Using this Tronsmart wireless charger is very simple and we’re not just saying that. At the bottom back of the charger is where the USB-C input port is and once you connect your charging cable, the charger is ready to use. You can either place your smartphone vertically or horizontally on this charger and that’s because it has two charging coils.

Also, there’s a very dim LED light strip at the bottom of this charger and it’s out of the way and we could barely see it and that’s actually a good thing. The reason for that is because some wireless chargers tend to have very noticeable and right in front lights; the problem with that is they can be obstructive while you’re sleeping.

In this case, the light is barely even noticeable and it switches between colors. The Blue color light comes on when you place your smartphone on the charger and that means the charger is preparing to charge. The Green light means that your smartphone is charging.

Build

Structure and Material:

Build quality of this charger is very good as the top charging part simply isn’t glued to the base, and instead, it’s all just a single piece. Also, the bottom part where your smartphone goes is a rubber piece so that your smartphone doesn’t move around. There are also rubber pads at the bottom of the charger so that the charger doesn’t slide around.

Tech:

This Tronsmart wireless charger actually uses a fan and therefore heating up during changing is a lot less. The fan does such a good job that there’s barely even warmth when you lift your smartphone from the charger. The usage of heat vents is rare with wireless chargers, and the usage of a fan is even rarer, but this Tronsmart charger has them both.

Reliability

It’s a reliable wireless charger for Android smartphones and very reliable for Samsung smartphone as they can fast charge with them. Not so reliable for the iPhone X or the iPhone 8 as the fast charging isn’t available for them.

Summary:

Power:

Charging power is able to deliver Fast Wireless charging when you use a Quick Charge wall charger and the best thing is that this charger uses USB-C input. However, it’s best to look for a wireless charger that can offer fast charging for the iPhone X and iPhone 8, elsewhere.

Design:

Easy to use with its use of two charging coils, and it has a dim LED light that indicates charging at the bottom.

Build:

The build quality of this charger is great as it’s all just a single piece and this wireless charger uses both, air vents and a fan.

Reliability:

It’s a very reliable charger for Qi Compatible Android smartphones but it misses the mark for fast charging for the new Qi compatible iPhones from Apple.
