Certain power banks are good for certain charging needs, and you may be looking for a power bank that has a few different options that you can use while you’re on the move. Most notably, a power bank using multiple ports and a built-in cable allows the power bank to be reliable if you don’t have a cable handy.

In this review, we’re taking a look at this UGREEN PB172 10,000mAh power bank that features a built-in cable and two ports. This power bank may very well be the most reliable portable charger for smartphones that you can own. Let’s take a closer look to see why that is.

Power

Power Capacity:

This UGREEN power bank has a 10,000mAh power capacity, an alright amount of power that can be useful for charging smartphones to full power about once or twice. However, at this point, modern smartphones now have huge batteries. With the OnePlus 9 Pro using a 4,500mAh battery, the Samsung Galaxy S20 Ultra has a 5,000mAh battery, and the iPhone 12 Pro Max, which is a phone that is known to have a relatively small battery, has a 3,687mAh battery. So if you have a new model phone, you can expect to get at least a single full charge with some power left over. You also have to account for power capacity being lost during charging, especially with high-speed charging, which this power bank is all about.

Output Charging:

The charging that this UGREEN power bank offers is the best part of owning it, as each of its outputs features fast charging. The power bank has a built-in USB-C cable that has an 18W charging speed. We quickly charged a Google Pixel and a Samsung Galaxy Note 9 via the built-in USB-C cable in our tests.

The two ports are a USB-C Power Delivery port and a USB-A Quick Charge 3.0 port. The USB-C Power Delivery port has a 20W charging speed, slightly higher than the USB-C cable, and we were also able to fast charge the Google Pixel and Note 9 using the USB-C PD port. You may also use the USB-C PD port to fast charge iPhones with a Lightning to USB-C cable.

One of the best parts of this power bank that you may rarely use is its ability to charge three devices simultaneously. We were able to charge a Google Pixel, a Samsung Galaxy S6, and an LG G7 simultaneously; for a 10,000mAh power bank, this is impressive because being able to charge three devices at the same time is common on 20,000mAh power banks, not 10,000mAh power banks.

Input Charging:

Recharging this UGREEN power bank can only be done via the USB-C PD port, and you’re able to recharge the power bank at 18W, so we recommend that you use a PD wall charger to get it back to full power faster.

Design

Size and Weight:

10,000mAh power banks should now be considered mini power banks, as they’re so small. Getting a 3,000mAh or 5,000mAh portable charger also seems unnecessary as you’re able to get more charging power with a similar size with a 10,000mAh power bank.

This UGREEN PB172 power bank has a 4-inch length, a width of 2 inches, and a thickness of 0.8 inches. We could easily hold it and use a smartphone, or you can place it into your pocket.

Functional Components:

The charger automatically starts charging when you plug a device into the power bank; however, the power bank does have a power button that you can press to restart charging if it has stopped. The built-in USB-C cable has a small compartment that goes directly into the power bank, so when you’re not using the charger, it completely conceals into the power bank.

Build

Structure and Material:

The build of the power bank is strong, and you don’t have to worry about it breaking apart even for daily use. The only part you have to worry about is the built-in USB-C cable breaking, and you want to make sure that you’re not pulling on it too much or putting too much strain on it.

Tech:

Even when you’re charging three devices simultaneously, the power bank does not heat up, which is due to the power bank limiting power output to 15W when you’re charging multiple devices at the same time.

Reliability

This is one of the most reliable 10,000mAh power banks that you can own for various reasons. The power bank has a built-in USB-C cable that uses Power Delivery. Therefore when you have it charged up, you don’t need a separate cable to use it if you have a USB-C smartphone. The two ports also feature fast charging with a 20W USB-C Power Delivery port and a USB-A Quick Charge 3.0 port. You can charge three devices at the same time, too.

What’s even better is included in the box is a USB-C to USB-C and USB-C to USB-A cable; both of these cables allow you to start using the power bank right out of the box.

Summary:

Power:

The 10,000mAh power capacity may no longer be enough to charge most modern smartphones to full power twice, but you will be able to get your phone to full power once. The charging is impressive, with the power bank using a built-in cable that uses Power Delivery. It also has a Quick Charge USB-A port and a 20W USB-C Power Delivery port.

Design:

It’s a mini power bank that you won’t have trouble taking anywhere, even with the built-in cable, as the cable fits directly into the power bank and conceals it.

Build:

The charger is built well and doesn’t overheat, even when charging three devices simultaneously.

Reliability:

The power bank comes with a USB-C to USB-A cable and a USB-C to USB-C cable. You have access to three fast charging options, from the built-in cable to the two ports.
