Higher capacity power banks tend to be big, they tend to have more than just one port and we expect them to not fit into our pockets.

That is all proven wrong by the Xiaomi 10,000mAh power bank that surprised us with what it had to offer.

Xiaomi is a company that’s known for its smartphones more than its power banks, especially because the company is Chinese and most of its products are known within China which is where most of their sales are made.

That’s a shame because more people out of China should know about this Xiaomi power bank. After all, it has quite a bit to offer, even with Xiaomi’s honest details about this supposedly high capacity power bank charger it still offers value.

Power

The Xiaomi power bank shows its self up as a 10,000mAh power bank. If you look at the power bank within Amazon, Aliexpress, and even Xiaomi’s very own website, the power bank is advertised as a 10,000mAh power bank.

Looking closer to what the power bank has to offer on their page for the 10,000mAh charger reveals that the power bank has a capacity of 6,250mAh.

Yes, you may be very disappointed after reading that but we must give credit to Xiaomi for being so transparent and honest about what this power bank has to offer and giving people a chance to know what this charger has to offer.

Conversion of Power

pic-5

The reason the power bank has a capacity of 6,250mAh and not 10,000mAh is that lots of energy is lost when charging is happening because the energy conversion uses heat and as a result, the heat dissipates the energy.

Put that together with Voltage fluctuations and you end up with energy being lost at times during charging. Does this mean the power bank never holds a 10,000mAh capacity? No.

When we charged up the power bank to its full capacity, the power bank indeed does hold 10,000mAh of power.

However, the reason why the real capacity is 6,250mAh is that the power bank loses energy during charging.

Lastly, even though Xiaomi has clearly stated that you’re going to be getting a charging Output capacity of only 6,250mAh, we think that they’re just being very careful about what they tell their consumers.

The Real Output of Power is Better than Xiaomi states

We found that the 10,000mAh power bank has a real capacity of 7,000mAh. That’s because power lost during conversion isn’t nearly as severe as the way Xiaomi depicted their energy loss was at.

Although it’s still a disappointment to lose 3,000mAh of valuable energy it’s still enough capacity to charge a smartphone a few times. As for a tablet, you’re going to get one good charge.

Output Charging:

Then there’s the single USB charging Output that charges at 5V/2.1A. It’s a good charging speed for a power bank of its capacity, and honestly, it was a wise choice to equip this power bank with a single port anyways because of the energy loss over just a single charging port.

The charging speed is quite close to max standard charging speed, so you won’t find very much trouble charging even an iPad quickly.

Input Recharging:

The Micro-USB Input port charging speed is a 5V/2.0A standard charging rate that you’d come to expect.

To make sure that you’re going to recharge the power bank at the fastest possible speed, we recommend using a wall charger that is rated at 5V/2.0A charging Output or higher because then it will take 5.5 hours to fully recharge the power bank; Versus a 1.0 Amperage charger.

Design

Size and Weight:

Xiaomi’s 10,000mAh power bank may sound big but it’s not.

The power bank is surprisingly small, and is about the size of an iPhone 6 Plus but with just a bit more width and height. Xiaomi advertises the power bank to be about the size of a credit card but alas that’s not the case because it’s simply bigger than a credit card.

The power bank’s general shape is a rectangle that has curves that wrap around it, which makes the power bank very easy to hold in just a single hand.

It’s a simply designed power bank that you can hold or put into nearly any bag for traveling purposes.

However, the power bank is not going to fit into your pocket very easily because of its thickness. The thickness of the power bank is its weakest area on design, coming in at about 1 inch thick, although it won’t be fitting into your pocket or at least not comfortably anyway.

It’s a power bank that is still very portable. It has a length of 3.8 inches and a width of 3.2 inches. It weighs 6.4 ounces.

We would like to say that if it were thinner, the design would be perfect.

Functional Components:

All the functional components of the power bank are on a single face on top of the power bank where you’ll find the Power button, USB charging Output, Micro-USB Input, and the 4 LED capacity indicators. The power button is used to turn on the power bank and can also be tapped to check the remaining capacity.

Build

Structure and Material:

The build of the Xiaomi power bank is an aspect where it can hold very strongly. Since it’s a very minimal power bank that takes advantage of the least amount of space as possible, all the functional aspects of the power bank are in one place and that makes it less prone to damage.

That’s because where all the functional things are: Output, Input, Power button, and LED light indicators, they’re all in an indented area of the power bank, so if the power bank were to fall, those pieces would be the safest.

The power button itself is also indented because it’s the piece that has the most chance of becoming damaged.

The body of the power bank is made of Anodized Aluminum that makes the power bank more resistant to corrosion and general wear of using it daily.

Essentially, it’s well put together, with the 3 main parts holding the power bank together: The Overarching Anodized Aluminum body and the two side plates on the sides. It’s a power bank that is built for everyday trials.

Reliability

The Xiaomi power bank is bringing what it is capable of bringing to the table.

It does its best when it comes to power capacity, but it will fall short if you’re expecting a full 10,000mAh capacity for charging your devices.

The charging speed can be well relied on to charge any device that you connect to the power bank with respectable speed and a recharge rate that should be relied on when you’re sleeping.

Its design is simple enough to understand and use daily, as well as its build quality. The power bank does give reliability but only for those that are willing to lower their expectations.

We know that sounds a little harsh but if the Xiaomi power bank had a 10,000mAh Output charging capacity, then it wouldn’t have just 1 charging output and it most likely wouldn’t be so small.

If you’re alright with using a 7,000mAh power bank instead of a 10,000mAh one, then it’s a power bank that you can rely on what it delivers.

Summary:

Power:

The power of the Xiaomi power bank falls short of what it should deliver.

Xiaomi themselves admit that the original charging capacity that you’re going to receive is 6,250mAh (We found it to be 7,000mAh) rather than the advertised 10,000mAh.

It’s pretty much an average power capacity that most portable chargers around the same capacity can output.

Design:

The size of the power bank is surprisingly small and can fit into a hand very easily with the curves of the body.

All the functional things for the power bank are on a single size of the portable charger, which makes it very easy to use. The biggest flaw is the thickness of the power bank; As small as it may be the power bank is entirely too thick to fit into your pocket.

Build:

The build of the power bank is its strongest point. The center body is made of Anodized Aluminum that can withstand everyday corrosion.

Since everything functional is on one side of the power bank and everything is within an indentation, if the power bank were to fall then the Anodized Aluminum body can take the shock and all the functional components would be safe because they’re safely indented within the power bank.

Reliability:

The reliability of the Xiaomi power bank falls short of what it should offer and what it offers.

The power bank is simply lacking in the department of power when it really shouldn’t be.

A true 10,000mAh capacity for this power bank would make it an absolute superstar to rely on, but the charging output capacity goes to show just how much this power bank is lacking.

Conclusion:

The Xiaomi power bank does a lot of things right with its build quality and design.

Its loss of power capacity while charging is quite normal and we’re glad that Xiaomi openly states what the conversion of their power bank is like.
