A battery case isn’t one of the most popular types of cases as most people want the slimmest and most seamless case for their smartphone.

That said, battery cases are a portable charger that has taken the shape of the smartphone that they’re made for. Sure, these cases are quite bulky and also add weight to your smartphone but in terms of portable power, it’s quite a good solution.

This is the ZeroLemon 8,500mAh Galaxy S8 battery case. The Galaxy S8 is one of the newest flagship smartphones on the market and even though it has a battery capacity of 3,000mAh it’s still bound to run out sooner or later.

The worst thing is having a low battery power when you need to use your smartphone the most, and that is one of the mains reasons that this ZeroLemon battery case can be very useful to have.

That said, with its power, it doesn’t come without flaws. Let’s take a closer look.

Power Capacity:

The power capacity of this ZeroLemon battery case is higher than most other battery cases on the market and that’s because it has an 8,500mAh power capacity.

That’s not the power that you’re going to be able to use towards charging your Galaxy S8, but it’s still a lot higher than most battery cases have. Let’s take a look at the Output power capacity that you’re able to use.

3.7 x 8,500 = 31,450 / 5 = 6,290

Number of Full Charges

2.0 Full Charges

So the output power capacity that you’re actually able to use with this battery case is 6,290mAh.

This is still a ton of power when it comes to battery cases in general and it’s a lot of power for charging a Galaxy S8. That’s because the Galaxy S8 has a battery capacity of 3,000mAh, as a result, you’re able to charge it to full power about two times.

So you’re able to use the battery case for about 2 days straight, or maybe even 3 days; as you can initially use the power of your filled up battery on one day, then charge it back to full power on the next day, and then the battery case can supply just one more full charge for another day too.

Overall, it’s one of the most long-lasting power capacities for a battery case.

Output Charging:

Battery cases don’t often have fast charging speeds and that is the case here, as this ZeroLemon battery case has a USB-C charging portend that has a charging speed of 5V/1.5A.

This is a slower charging speed than the other battery cases that we’ve done reviews on for the Galaxy S8 that have 5V/1.8A speeds.

The Galaxy S8 has a max standard charging speed of 5V/3.0A, so the battery case charging speed is half of that. Also, the overall max charging speed of the S8 is done through a Quick Charge charging electronic.

With all that said, you’re not purchasing this battery case for its charging speed, and rather for the capacity of the battery case. That’s because you’re going to be having the battery case on most of the time and just want more power to your smartphone and therefore the charging speed of a battery case is less relevant as long as your phone is being charged.

That said, for such a large battery case with a high power capacity, it would have been pretty cool to see a battery case that has a faster-charging speed than the standard 5V/1.5A that most battery cases have.

Input Charging:

Even though the Output charging of this battery case is slower than other Galaxy S8 battery cases we’ve reviewed, the input recharging speed stays the same. As it has a 5V/1.8A recharging speed and you’re able to recharge it through its USB-C input port.

Just use a 2 Amp wall charger to make sure that you’re able to recharge the battery case at its max power.

Also, you’re able to recharge the battery case and charge your Galaxy S8 at the same time. Please take a look at Pass-Through Charging.

Design

Size and Weight:

Just like portable chargers, battery case size and weight are based on their power capacities. In this case, that means this battery case is going to be bulkier than most other battery cases that have lower power capacities. ZeroLemon knows that this battery is quite large and does add some weight to the Galaxy S8.

The battery cases have a length of 6.7 inches, a width of 2.8 inches, and it has a thickness of 0.8 inches. The weight of the battery case is 7.1 ounces.

So it adds some size and the weight of the battery case plus the Galaxy S8 is 12.5 ounces. That’s more than just half a pound of weight which can be troublesome if you don’t know what you’re in for.

Overall, this battery case has a lot of equivalent exchange going on with its high power, as you get a large size and an increase in weight in return. It’s up to you to decide if this battery case will be a daily driver or is it more for those special occasions such as vacations or hiking?

Functional Components:

The functional components of this ZeroLemon battery case are clear to see and cut-out accurately. Of course, at the back where the camera is, you’re going to have a harder time reaching the fingerprint scanner as there’s a higher bezel.

Also at the back is where the power button is along with 4 White LED power capacity indicators.

At the bottom is where the USB-C input is to recharge the battery case itself and there’s also the headphone hole. The battery case comes with a headphone jack so you’re able to plug in your earbuds or headphones in an easier manner.

What makes the user experience with this battery case different than other battery cases is that you’re able to Sync and do data transfer with the battery case on.

Just something to note, this ZeroLemon battery case has two main parts to it and that would the power bank portion itself where you connect the Galaxy S8 and then once you put your Galaxy S8 on the power bank part, it goes into the TPU case that holds it all together.

Build

Structure and Material:

The TPU case that this battery uses is a tough one and unlike most other battery cases, this one offers protection to your screen as it has a raised bezel at its edge.

Tech:

Since the charging speed isn’t too fast, there isn’t any heating happening which is a great thing as having a battery case on the phone for longer periods can be risky. But it’s all good here.

Reliability

With its very high power capacity, it’s one of the most useful parts of the battery case as you can charge an S8 to its full power at least twice.

That can result in the constant use of your smartphone for about three days until you need to recharge the battery case. Even then, you can still recharge the battery case and charge your S8 at the same time because it’s capable of pass-through charging.

Power for this battery case is its best part, what’s most unreliable because of its high power capacity is its larger size and the heavier weight that it adds can be highly inconvenient.

Summary:

Power:

It has one of the highest power capacities when it comes to battery cases, and the use of pass-through charging is very good.

Design:

Not the slimmest battery case on the market at all and that’s because of its high power capacity. You have to be aware of just how large this battery case is and how much weight it adds.

Build:

Build quality is good as it’s a case that adds protection to the screen in addition to the entire body of the phone.

Reliability:

It’s a highly reliable battery case when it comes to its power capacity, but not so much for its size and weight.
