TOPDON JS2000 2000A Portable Jump Starter Review

You should own a portable jump starter if you drive a car or any other vehicle that uses a 12V battery. If you own a car, a jump starter is a must because of how reliable it can be if your battery is weak and you can’t start your car. Otherwise, you’d be stranded. Also, at this point, there’s a wide selection of jump starters to choose from that have a varying peak current of jump-starting; it’s honestly one of the best times to own one.

In this review, I’m looking at one of Amazon’s best-selling jump starters, the TOPDON JS2000 portable jump starter. This is a simple one from TOPDON, but still as reliable as its competitors and priced fairly.

Power Capacity

The TOPDON jump starter has a 16,000mAh power capacity, which is pretty good, although some have higher capacities. However, for this device, you’re mainly going to be used for jump-starting your car and not generally charging your devices, you could, but that’s not really what it’s for. In terms of charging phones with a 16,000mAh capacity, you could get about four full charges, or tablets could get about 1.5 full charges.

What matters is how many times you can jump-start you can get from full capacity; in this case, you can earn about 30. That is pretty good, considering that you won’t use this device very often and only in those emergencies, so you’ll almost always be able to use this as long as you have it charged up.

Jump Starting Power

The jump-starting power of this TOPDON JS2000 is right in the name, which means that it has a 2000A peak current. A 2000A peak current jump starter should be your first, or at the least, starting choice when purchasing a jump starter, simply because anything lower would be unreliable. The higher the peak current, the higher your vehicle’s chance to jump-start.

There are higher peak current jump starters, but those are the most expensive, and for most cases, a 2000A peak current will service you well. This TOPDON jump starter can jump-start 8L gasoline engines or 6L Diesel engines. Also, it has to be a 12V lead acid battery that you’re using with this TOPDON jump starter.

Output Charging

This jump starter has three ports, including two USB-A ports and one DC 5521 port. One of the USB-A ports features Quick Charge, which can fast charge compatible Android phones; the other USB-A port has a 10W standard charging speed. The DC port has a 16.8V/10A, so, at full power, it can have a 168W output.

The charging ports are alright, but unfortunately, the USB-C port on this jump starter is not an output port and can only be used as an input to recharge from. Some newer jump starters are now using 100W USB-C Power Delivery ports that can be used to charge your devices and can be used to recharge from; those are pretty expensive, though, so we don’t fault this TOPDON one for not featuring it.

The DC 5521 port can be used if you use a DC to cigarette lighter port adapter, as you could use a portable tire pump from the port. In my testing, I tried using the tire pump, but mine was too powerful for the DC port to handle, so I recommend making sure that yours fits into the capabilities of the DC port.

Overall, the charging power is alright, and it would have been nice to use the USB-C port as an output.

Input Charging

To recharge this jump starter, you must use the USB-C input that can recharge the jump starter at 18W. I recommend using a 20W Power Delivery wall charger to recharge it because, in my testing, the jump starter was able to recharge at 20W, slightly higher than its specified 18W input.

Size and Weight

This isn’t a large jump starter. It has a length of 9 inches, a width of 4 inches, and a thickness of 1.1 inches. It weighs 3 pounds. One of the best parts of purchasing this TOPDON JS2000 is that you get a carrying case in the box that you can use to place the jump starter inside and the jumper cables.

Functional Components

Using this jump starter is simple. When it comes to jump-starting your car, you have to plug the jumper cables into the port, and the power bank automatically turns on. Then you connect the clamps to your battery, with the positive to positive and negative to negative. If you have the clamps reversed, the adapter on the clamps will tell you.

Once the jumper cables are connected to the battery, a solid green light will turn on over the “correct” text showing that you’re ready to jump-start your car.

Also, a boost button on the adapter can allow the jump starter to output full power if you’re trying to jump-start with a fully dead battery.

You’ll find most functional parts on the jump starter under its covers, including all the charging and jumper ports. A LED 300W lumen flashlight can be turned on via the power button at the top of the jump starter. Also, it features four power capacity indicators.

Structure and Material

The build quality of this jump starter is good, in my opinion. It has a solid build, and if you have the ports covered, this unit has an IP64 water resistance rating, meaning it can withstand water splashes.

Reliability

If you want a portable jump starter in your car because you’re afraid that the day may come when you have a weak or dead battery, this TOPDON JS2000 is a good choice. A 2000A peak current is the least you should start with if you don’t want to spend more money on higher current jump starters. The better part is that this TOPDON jump starter features a Boost mode that can jump-start a completely dead battery where a voltage can’t even be detected.

Conclusion

There are many portable jump starters, and it’s best to own at least one. This TOPDON JS2000 jump starter is a reliable one that comes with nearly all accessories that you need to use it, and it has a 2000A peak current that is reliable for most needs, and you won’t be spending very serious cash.
