Power banks have all sorts of features, and one of the best features they can have is the ability to jump-start your car. This is where portable jump starters come in, which are power banks that can jump-start your vehicle. Not having to rely on another car for a jump start in the case of your battery being weak and your vehicle not starting can be a huge relief and get you out of a tough spot; also, it gives you peace of mind knowing that you always have a backup plan.

That said, portable jump-starters have never really been great on the charging aspect for devices, as they would usually have standard USB-A ports and call it a day. In this review, we’re looking at this LOKITHOR J401 2500A jump starter that can work well with most vehicles, and it features some of the most powerful charging we’ve seen from a jump starter power bank.

Power

Power Capacity:

The capacity of this LOKITHOR jump-starter 20,000mAh, and that’s a decent capacity in this case because you can jump-start about 60 times, which is probably more than enough for most people. Of course, the 60-time jump-starting with this power bank is possible as long as the capacity is 100% and if each jump-start succeeds at the first crank. Still, considering how often you’ll be using this power bank, the 20,000mAh is more than enough as this is an emergency type of charger.

On the charging side, since this LOKITHOR power bank has such powerful ports, with a 100W USB-C Power Delivery port and a USB-A Quick Charge port, you can charge most devices with it. The 20,000mAh capacity for charging a tablet or laptop will get you at least a single full recharge. Charging phones with this power bank will get you three or four total charges depending on your phone.

So the capacity is good, but what’s more impressive is the power from the charging ports. 

Output Charging:

This power bank has a 1500 Amp starting current and a 2500 Peak current for jump-starting vehicles, and it is compatible with all sorts of 12V vehicles. Specifically, it’s best to use this LOKITHOR jump starter for either 8.5L gas engines or 6.5L diesel engine vehicles. It’s a good amount of power. However, it’s not the most power you can get with a portable jump starter as some have a 4000 Amp peak current, and those types are more able to jump-start weaker batteries.

This LOKITHOR one will do just fine for most needs, as higher peak current jump starters are also more expensive.

Charging Ports:

As we mentioned, the more impressive part of this LOKITHOR portable jump starter is the ports because it has a 100W USB-C Power Delivery port and a USB-A Quick Charge port. The USB-A Quick Charge port isn’t very impressive, but the USB-C port is.

Most jump starters have standard USB-A ports, and that’s it. This one has a 100W USB-C port that can fast charge all sorts of devices, such as phones, tablets, laptops, and more, at their max speed. We could charge a Lenovo Flex 5 laptop at a maximum rate while fast charging a Galaxy Note 9 from the USB-A port. With its 100W output, you can charge most USB-C chargeable laptops from the USB-C port.

Also, we could super fast charge a Galaxy S20 at 25W from the USB-C port, meaning that the USB-C port features PPS super fast charge for compatible devices.

This type of charging is not what you expect from a portable jump starter, but it’s great to have; in fact, you could use this LOKITHOR jump starter power bank as a daily driver for charging your devices if you want to.

Input Charging:

Another significant part of the ports is the recharging. The USB-C port also has a 100W Power Delivery input, meaning that if you use a 100W Power Delivery wall charger, you can recharge this power bank within an hour or less. That is what we did when we used a UGREEN 100W PD charger, and the jump starter was able to recharge back to full power in under an hour; this is great in case the power bank is low on power and you need it for a road trip, you can have it recharge insanely quickly.

You can also recharge this power bank using the DC input port with the included car charger, which has a 60W input speed.

Design

Size and Weight:

Since this is a jump starter power bank, it’s larger than a regular 20,000mAh power bank used for charging. This LOKITHOR jump starter has a length of 9.4 inches, a width of 4.1 inches, and a 2.3-inch thickness. The power bank weighs 2.3 pounds.

So a bit on the large side for a power bank, which is why most consumers will leave this in their vehicles in an emergency. At the same time, if you need to charge your phone, laptop, or any other device, you can take this with you nearly anywhere. Of course, you can’t fit it into your pocket because it’s too large.

Functional Components:

Look at the jump starter itself; at the top, there’s a screen, power button, and flashlight button. You have to hold the power button to turn on the power bank, and then the screen turns on. The screen shows the remaining capacity using four green blocks that indicate 25% of the battery. The screen also displays the voltage of the battery you’re jump-starting once you have the clamps on the positive and negative terminals.

Off to the sides of the jump-starter is where you’ll find the charging and jump-starter ports. There is a flashlight off to the side that can be turned on by holding down the flashlight button, and it has three settings a constant on mode, red flashing mode, and a red SOS mode.

To jump-start your car with this LOKITHOR jump starter, you have to connect the jumper cables to the power bank, then connect the clamps to the positive and negative terminals on your car battery; turn on the power bank by holding down the power button and then the voltage of the battery will appear on the screen and a green light will appear at the top to show that you’re ready to start your car.

Build

Structure and Material:

The build quality of this LOKITHOR jump starter is strong and feels like it could take a decent drop and can stay in your car through all the bumps for miles and miles. If you have the ports fully covered, this power bank has an IP65 water-resistant rating, meaning that it can withstand splashes of water but cannot withstand being submerged in water.

Tech:

This LOKITHOR jump starter has all sorts of protections that keep it from bursting into flames, such as overcurrent protection, high-temperature, and low-temperature protection, overload protection, and much more. This is all especially helpful when you’re jump-starting your car and a lot of heat is generated inside this power bank. All these protections help keep the battery safe from overheating and expanding.

Reliability

If you’re searching for a reliable portable jump starter with an 8.5L gas engine or 6.5L diesel engine, this LOKITHOR J401portable jump starter is a good choice. It has a decent starting and peak current and great charging ports. Seriously, a 100W USB-C Power Delivery port on a power bank like this is incredible as you can use it to charge most devices at their max speed. Also, you can recharge this power bank at 100W when you use a 100W PD wall charger.

In the box, you get nearly everything you need to start using the jump starter, which includes a USB-C to USB-C cable, a USB-C to USB-A cable, a DC car charging cable, and the jumper cables.

The LOKITHOR J401 2500A portable jump starter is a reliable one with a good amount of jump starting power, a powerful 100W USB-C Power Delivery port that lets you recharge it at 100W, too, and it comes with many accessories that prove to be very useful. We wish it came with a 100W Power Delivery wall charger. There is a variant of this jump starter that you can buy that includes a 100W PD charger and a carrying case, though.
